All Welcome
aw! set for late afternoon

His mood had not been as sunny since the event at the borders. He had just started to grow curious about the world again, but now he was too scared to venture very far from the den. Still, the cool breeze had drawn him outside when he had woken from his nap, and he had trotted out to sit and stare at the dark clouds that turned the sky a dreary grey.

A bird landed on the ground a few feet from him and pecked at something on the ground. The little bear stared, in awe of its pretty blue coloring. A light grey was draped across its back and black ran down the sides of its neck and dotted its wings along with some white. He had never seen anything like it. For a few moments, bird and boy stared at each other silently. But Kallik's curiosity got the better of him, and impulsively, he took a step forward—and just like the the bird was gone, flapping its wings and lifting into the trees where it disappeared.

The pale boy huffed softly and then slumped to the ground to pout. Maybe the bird would come back if he was still enough.

an audible gasp escaped him as he watched the speckled bird fly away. there was another boy who’d been there watching, and though they didn’t know one another, alsek couldn’t help but acknowledge his obvious disappointment.

he softly barked his greeting, hoping to avoid any alarm. that was a cool bird, huh? alsek mused, do you know what birds are? the boy’s age couldn’t be known, but he didn’t look much smaller than alsek.. could he even speak yet?

my friend said that sometimes they get scared because they are small, like.. like me and you. of course, wolves were much larger than most birds, but the idea was the same. do you wanna go looking for it? maybe it’d perched somewhere nearby.

The bark startled him into a sitting position and he looked with wide eyes to the dark child he had never seen before. He was talking about birds and asked him if he knew what they were. Kallik wanted to answer him, and even though he really should be able to manage some words by now, it was like there something in his brain keeping him from speaking. So instead of answering, he just stared.

He did eventually look back in the direction the bird had gone when the other boy told him they were small and that sometimes they get scared. It made sense. The little bear was scared a lot these days, sometimes for no real reason it seemed.

His gaze whipped back to other child when he mentioned going to look for it, and there was obvious fear in his expression. He glanced warily to the den and then back to the boy. Even if he was allowed to leave, it was the absolute last thing he wanted to do; not after what happened the last time he had decided to venture from the den. He was convinced that wandering too far automatically meant something bad would happen.

kallik’s silence worried alsek into submission. he slowly worked his way onto his belly, ears flexed flat against his skull and his gaze averted toward the ground. had he done something wrong already?

we can stay here, too, he offered with a soothing hum, birds.. they come back sometimes. alsek knew the feeling of anxiety well, had been well-versed in its mourner’s song for his entire life, and didn’t wish to push kallik any further than he would allow.

Relief washed over him when the other boy stated that they could stay here and that maybe the bird would come back. He was, however, concerned that the dark boy seemed so distressed all of the sudden. What had Kallik done?

He wasn't sure how to fix it, so he sat there for a few moments and looked around. A bright yellow flower caught his attention where it grew up from the ground and sat atop a long green stem. The little bear silently trotted over and plucked the plant from the ground and clasped it carefully between his teeth. He walked back over to the other boy and set the flower down in front of his nose. Then he took a seat and watched to see if it would make him feel better. They could find fun things here without having to leave.

strangely enough, kallik seemed to be the one interested in helping alsek. the tonrar didn’t mind the unexpected shift in roles, but he couldn’t say with honesty that he understood it either.

either, or. this is called wildflower, alsek explained, if you find a flower, and you don’t know what it’s really called, you can call it wildflower. he wasn’t sure if that was always the case, but he’d been confidently using the technique for some time.

kallik’s interested stare prompted alsek to continue talking, though he wasn’t actually sure what to say. do you like flowers? he asked, thinking about his trip with ikiaq. easthollow was rife with flora of every variety.

A wildflower. He didn't think he had ever heard that word before. He thought maybe he had seen more the last and only time he had ventured from the den, but that memory was so heavy with panic and confusion, that he honestly couldn't remember much of the details of his surroundings. He nodded, though, thankful for the information.

At the other boy's next question, he shrugged. He didn't feel a particular way about flowers really. He didn't feel a particular way about most things—just numb or anxious most of the time. His family brought him contentment occasionally, but even that was laced with undertones of fear and anxiety. He did, however, like Alsek; he seemed nice and talking to him helped distract him from his intrusive thoughts. He wished he could offer more to this conversation, but there wasn't much a mute kid could do when meeting strangers. He settled down on the ground in front of the other boy and touched his paw to the flower, his gaze expectant—he wanted to know more.

uhm, you don’t talk much. a quick glance over kallik, then he added, maybe that’s not a bad thing. alsek hadn’t met anyone before that didn’t speak, so trying to communicate was a little more difficult, but that was alright. he needed the company just as much as kallik did.

his small paw tapping the wildflower’s petals indicated some interest. alsek didn’t really know much, but he was willing to share what knowledge he did have. since you picked it, it’s not gonna grow anymore, alsek explained, but more flowers will grow around where this one came from.

rain normally makes flowers grow, and sometimes fire, too.. but i don’t think we have any of that. at least, he hadn’t seen fire before.
