Challenge
HERE WE GO

It was time.  The wives of Rusalka moved as one, and when the challenge came, they would howl as one.

Rosalyn kept close to @Erzulie, feeling each of their energies feed into the other with a slow, building momentum.  Her pulse pounded, but happily.  She hadn't asked for this, but the closer it came, the more she felt this might be just the opportunity they had waited for.

They'd spoken quietly into the nights preceding of plans, what might change, what to do should things go awry.  She'd spoken with the children before @Raleska took them, letting them know they would join them soon. @Chacal, @Regin, @Valravn, @Solaire, @Arcelia... it was for them, mostly, they did this.  It was time to build a legacy for their own to uphold.  Time to prove to them that their mamans were what they professed to be.

She caught Erzulie's gaze a moment, then lifted her head, howling.  Time for @Wintersbane to come and reckon with the true power in the moors.

their song, lilting, a command. no soft summons in this moment. their children tucked into foliage away from the moorlands the wives now walked.
she had held her wife's eye before their dirge began, and now as the echoes eddied into a reverberation, she glanced to the pirate again and clenched her toes against the cold earth.
he would come. whether or not he saw fit to relinquish his claim upon rusalka remained to be seen.
she was silent, watchful.

the call resounds upon the tangy air; thick with moss musk, damp earth and tinged with salt. it does not come as a surprise to wintersbane and he heads off in the direction with haste. he knew his rank was unsteady; and as time ticked on like the ache beneath a bruise, suspects that he would not hold it much longer. to rusalka, he will always be seen as the usurper. the outlaw king; and wintersbane has designs for his future that doesn’t involve a constant civil war with every step he took.

he sees erzulie and rosalyn as he approaches; polar gaze taking quick stock of the situation. they are both poised, twin cobras ready to strike at him. for a moment he stares at the two women. against one? he could probably win. but he’s outnumbered in the herenow and is sure that the entire pack feels much the same as they.

if there was one thing that wintesbane gained with age it was knowing when he’s lost. when a losing battle is a losing battle and it was a waste of energy and strength to bother fighting. when fighting was only to sate his pride.

i won’t fight you. wintersbane breaks his silence, speaking to the wives. it’s yours. especially since they were willing to fight him two on one. hardly the fair fight he’d given aninigan. i’ll leave in peace and i’ll never return. he’s been doing that a lot lately.

So it was to be easy.  He would not risk against the two of them.  This is why you don't deserve it.  It means nothing to you. Rosalyn thought uncharitably, her single eye raking across him with distrust and distaste.

He fully rolled over.  She tched with unveiled disgust.  If all you wanted here was to rule, then fine.  We have no room for you.  If you cared about Rusalka, and were willing to remain in your place, I see no reason for it.  She looked to Erzulie.  Her wife had seen him worthy of inviting in on first meeting, and Rosalyn had enjoyed his company.

If you feel entitled, and slighted, then you know where the borders are.  Rosalyn wasn't often openly mean, but his immediate surrender rubbed her the wrong way.  As did his immediate abdication of responsibility.  It showed that despite his aims, he held neither love nor loyalty, and it rankled her that he'd ever thought himself fit to rule them in that state.

so that was it, then? he would not fight for what he had taken from aningan? rusalka was not a lark to be had on a whim; this was the place of their children, a place of history. and so offense too crept into her expression. she had thought him worthy of respect, but the past years had taught her that no man could aptly meet that standard.
the jezebel lifted her head, lip curled with disgust. whoever he had been, whoever he would be, mattered not at all. and at the end of the day, he would not be counted among their leaders, only as the one who had deposed aningan and then abandoned rusalka.
"leave den, leave an' nevah return," erzulie spat with a lash of her tail.

Going to go ahead and summarize/close this! trying to clean things up <3

He left.

Rosalyn looked at Erzulie with evident disgust upon her features, and she saw it mirrored in her wife's scornful look.  They were the better for it, then, if he saw nothing in the rank worth defending.  If he'd truly thought he was well suited, and cared about their path forward, he would never have let them dispose of him so easily.

She lifted her muzzle and howled, a cry that Erzulie would hopefully join on.  Together they had claimed control of the moors, and now, Raleska could return with the children in tow.  The news when she returned would be heartbreaking, but until then, Rosalyn could celebrate this victory.

erzulie watched him depart. his large dark form grew smaller and smaller, and soon faded beyonf the billow of the moorland. shaking out her hackles, the harlot scoffed to her wife, and then grinned as rosalyn began her song. rusalka at last belonged truly to the two of them; in the next she twined her own notes with that of her wife, beckoning the new dawn that had been born into their throats that day.
