Mal was the opposite. When someone was emotionally distanced, it made him uncertain. But when she softened, so did he. When Aibreann leaned against him pressed her face into her fur, he turned his head slightly, licking the crown of her head before resting his chin there and holding her close.

When she pulled away and licked his cheek, he smiled, listening attentively. Now it was a little easier to understand. Similar things, different ways of expressing it. But actually promising to be there basically forever? Yeah, basically nobody in his life ever promised that. Okay, there were some exceptions, true, but when it came to those he'd had children with, more often than not it felt like he was the only one promising to always be there for their kids and all that, but it was often more of a question where he stood. Some were a definite no. And then there was Aibreann. And she turned away, he leaned in after, nuzzling her neck, speaking into her fur, You don't have to worry about it. Period. I'm with you.

Mal's touch soothes her, and she leans into it, silent for a few moments as she takes in his words. For a moment it feels like exactly what she'd wanted, a spark of joy to lift the weight of her emotions. But she knows better than to read too much into such a simple statement; better to risk an awkward moment now than a devastating one later. She needs to know where they stand. Does that mean... Her voice falters briefly, questioning and far more hopeful than she'd intended it. Is that a yes, then? This is unfamiliar territory — nothing like the calculated responses she'd given before. Now she feels uncertain, exposed, and far too dependent on whatever answer follows.

He licked her cheek, Yes. And he hoped he wouldn't be something to regret -- that for once in his life full of wrong turns, things would be okay in the end. It was a risk, but everything was. And he still wasn't even entirely sure Hua wanted to be with him -- there was that tiny patch of doubt from things she'd done...  They'd need to talk.

He then continued with a bit of a chuckle, You'll have to help me figure out how to explain things without choking on my own tongue. If we start now, maybe we'll have a chance of that happening by the time it's ok to bring it up directly. Caerus. Hua. Who else? There were probably a few more. Would Simmik find it weird?
