All Welcome
A recent growth spurt had made Kallik all lanky legs and too big paws; it was obvious he was going to be large like his father, and it was also obvious that the next few months of his life were going be full of awkward growth. Talking was still a challenge for him, but he manged a few words here and there with his family. He talked the most with Valette, though; with her, he would talk mostly full sentences because of all the wolves in his life, he trusted her the most. He had gotten pretty good a talking with his dad, too, he just often preferred not to unless asked a direct question.

As for wandering from the rendezvous site on his own, he had gotten braver in that regard too. He still stuck fairly close to what felt safe, but he could be found wandering a few miles in each direction, especially as the weather grew colder and grew more curious.

The sun had set hours ago, and the only thing lighting the grass in front of him was the glow from the moon. He followed the lit path in front of him, the cool air turning his breaths into light fog around his muzzle. When he found a collection of boulders, he stopped to inspect them, deciding after a few sniffs around the perimeter that it appeared safe. He jumped up to the top and settled down on his haunches, his gaze cast up to the cloudy night sky as he somberly wondered if his mother was looking down on him.

The last couple of months had passed in a blur for the man. The death of his wife extinguishing the light in his life and smothering his very will to live. Siarut spent very little time away from his den, except for his daily excursion along his favourite section of the border. But today something was different. There was no particular reason why the day itself was not exceptionally special. Perhaps the sun had risen just right, or the breeze had been just the right temperature upon awakening. In essence, Siarut couldn’t understand it, but he had the urge to walk. In the middle of the night, on the cusp of winter. Not that the cold bothered him.

So he rose slowly, almost stiffly, and ventured down toward the stream. He watched the water trickle by, but found he wasn’t thirsty in the slightest. With a weary sigh, Siarut followed his gut once again. Wandering off, grass skimming his paws.

What he didn’t expect was the sight of his son, head tilted back, olive green gaze fixed on the stars above. A small smile tugged his lips, and Siarut approached slowly, silently. As he grew closer his smile leveled out, shame shadowed his features. He hadn’t been the father they deserved, the father he had wanted to be. Even as his anxiety threatened to choke him, Siarut tilted his own green eyes on the sky above. ”Your mother used to love the stars.” The sentence would probably be just as shocking to Kallik as it was Siarut. He didn’t speak of her much, and his children knew better than to ask. But, for some reason, this night, the northern patriarch had dropped his guard.

He hadn't heard his father's quite arrival, and so when he heard the words come suddenly from beside him, his eyes widened and he jumped a little. But he immediately recovered, staring over at his dad with what was now surprise; he never talked about mom—he never really talked about much of anything, which was usually fine with Kallik, but it would have been nice to know more about their mother. He often wondered what it would be like to have her here with them now—how different life would be. The fact that she was a forbidden topic made her loss that much harder to deal with as he got older and more able to comprehend things. He kind of resented his father for making things this way, but also realized how hard it must be for him, so he tried not to hold it against him too much.

He watched Siarut with no expression for a few moments before looking back up to the sky. He was silent for a while, unsure what to say but afraid that if he said nothing then he would miss out on his chance to learn something about mom. So finally, he softly asked: Which one was her favorite? He looked back over at dad as he spoke, uncertainty on his face now as he wondered if he would get the usual reaction or if he would get the answer he so desperately wanted. He just wanted to know her like dad did.

Which one was her favorite?

His gaze remained fixed on the stars even as the young boy turned to look upon him. Siarut smiled softly, a deep melancholy filling his eyes. “You know… I’m not sure.” He shook his head with a small huff, “I never thought to ask.” His lips fell flat once more, lids falling shut as he pursed his lips against the still lingering pain.

“But, she reminded me of the north star. A blinding light for everyone to follow, leading you home.” Trying to reign in the emotions swirling just below the surface, Siarut turned back to his son. “Do you have a favorite?” Sia doubted Kallik knew them by name, but he wouldn’t dampen the spark in the boy’s curiosity because of his own stoicism. Even as Siarut saw his own reflection in Kallik’s gaze, he could see Nanook even more brightly.

He couldn't keep the disappointment from his face when his father told him that he had never learned his mother's favorite star; it was something he would have liked to know for no real reason other than he barely knew anything about her. Kallik looked back up to the sky and released a long soft breath, not saying anything in response.

His gaze searched the sky as his father spoke of Nanook and how she had reminded him of the north star. Right then, the quiet boy wished his mom was here to tell him of this north star. But she was not, and before he could work up the courage to ask more about it, dad was speaking again. He wanted to know Kallik's favorite star, but he didn't really know them well enough to be able to name any. He stared up at his father with a frown. I don't know them, he answered quietly, returning his gaze to the sky.
