Where the shit were they? When Nellie had returned home, to the bright and joyful copse where she'd been born, all she found were the remnants of memories and her father's grave. She sat there a while, just letting the minutes pass her by. She'd forgotten all the details about him - his smile, the way he walked, the texture of his fur... She'd trade anything for another moment with him to hold onto. Hey dad. She told him, starved of contact and severely disappointed by the lack of packmates 'round these parts. I know I haven't given you any reason up there to be proud of me, huh? She chuckled sadly. Still, I'm happy. I'm sure that counts for something, hm? Where's that pesky brother of mine - you got any clue where everyone went? Casually chatting, her smile faded. This was pointless, yet it felt less lonely. She picked herself up and went to gather some wildflowers. She left the bundle at his grave, smiling through the mist of forming tears. I better head out. It was cool seeing you again. Keep it real, yo...

After that, she wandered the wilderness again. She crossed the coast, traversed the flatlands, bathed in the wildest rivers until - eventually - she came across some woods. In the distance, something piqued her interest. It was something akin to a mountain, but no shape she'd ever seen before. She wanted to go there, for adventure's sake, not knowing it was where she needed to be.

She went to the caldera to tell her parents about how the party had gone in Bramblepoint. She assumed her younger siblings had already beaten her to it, yet she wanted to regale Towhee, @Phox and @Niamh about it anyway. When she arrived, her mother was patrolling the borders and Meerkat joined her, jabbering away for a while before asking the Sovereign about any news with the Redhawks. Towhee informed her of the recent goings-on with @Maia and @Wraen. Meerkat received a little bit of their history with Moonspear in the bargain.

By the time Towhee finished, the sun was already dipping in the sky. "I'll come back in a couple days to see dad and the others," Meerkat decided. It was so nice, being able to visit so easily like this. She gave her mother a goodbye smooch and disembarked north. She would cut directly through Bramblepoint and skirt around Salmon Lake, putting her back in the glen in time for supper with @Bronco. Just the thought of food made her stomach grumble and pinch with hunger.

As she hastened through the trees, the shadows lengthened around her. The glimpse of agolden coat stood out against the late afternoon gloom, causing Meerkat's head to snap in that direction. She stopped in her tracks. "Neema...?" she called, head tilting as she slowly swiveled in that direction.

Between the woods to the South of the Caldera and these to the North, Figment was starting to feel confident in his decision on which location he would claim as his training grounds. He'd loved the bog because of the wetlands that could add an extra level of difficulty to his work outs, but either of the woods he'd come across did have streams and ponds that could do the trick well enough. He liked the allure of the Southern woods because fewer wolves traveled there, but seeing as he was trying to put himself out there more and make more friends, it seemed that Bramblepoint would be the winner.

He was still panting as he began the trek back home after that day's workout. His fur was damp and fluffy from splashing around in a wide stream. It puffed out stupidly from his sides and the top of his head was spiked like his mother had liked to do to him when he was a kid. Unfortunately for him, he was unaware of any of this when he came across Meerkat's fresh scent and turned to hunt her down.

Neema...?

Fig frowned when he heard his little sister speak the name as a question, picking up his pace so he could see what had prompted the confusion in her tone. The brush parted as he stepped into view. He looked first at Meerkat, then over to the golden female that was quite obviously the one Meerkat referred to. She did look just like Niamh. Only younger, and prettier, and...

"Ohh.. crap..." Fig murmured, feeling his stomach drop into his butt. He looked absurd, didn't he? He was suddenly extremely aware of how just.. wrong his fur felt. He fought the urge to reach to tame it, not wanting to draw undue attention to his discomfort. Speaking of which... "I mean.. Nellie!" he corrected after a shake of his head, "Hi! You're... here!" Was his voice too high-pitched? Shit, was Meerkat witnessing this? Shit shit shit.

A small voice called out - the word was somewhat akin to her mother's name, too close for coincidence. Nellie's interest was piqued yet again as her ears swiveled to find the source of the voice, her head soon following. She scoffed, then laughed boisterously. You wish. She commented, finally spotting a small, sandy girl between the foliage. Nellie didn't recognize her, but if the girl knew her mother, then maybe she was Firebirds spawn. It'd mean her family was nearby. Or eaten by a bear. Or both.

Before she could question the girl about it though, another figure approached - unkept and shaggy and smelling like wet dog. She looked a little closer, admiring his calming eyes of green when she realized... This wasn't just any wet, homeless guy; THIS WAS HER WET, HOMELESS GUY. Geez, what happened to him? She watched him stumble over his words awkwardly, a little smirk forming on her maw as her eyes wandered to the spike on his head. She tried her very best not to laugh at him for it. You try'nna poke someone's eye out with that? She quipped with a soft chuckle. Sure, it was great to see him again and she'd missed him, but telling him that wasn't nearly as much fun as teasing him.

"You wish," came the reply, which was something Niamh would say, though that certainly wasn't her voice. Meerkat blinked and moved closer, brown eyes openly studying the other young she-wolf. Meerkat felt quite certain they'd never met, though there was a strong sense of familiarity that intrigued her.

Before she could analyze it too much, a wild Fig appeared. Meerkat's eyes cut to her older brother, widening a fraction as she took in his disheveled appearance. "What're—" she began to ask, when his loud, "Ohh, crap!" cut across her. His voice went to another register entirely as he spoke a name Meerkat recognized, even if she didn't know the wolf herself.

Nellie made a joke in reply as Meerkat's gaze shifted back to her with a sudden look of understanding. "Nellie!?" she echoed Fig, her voice infused with all the warmth reserved for loved ones. Just because they hadn't met didn't mean anything. She was still family! "Hi! I'm Meerkat, your..." Well, Nellie was Niamh's daughter and Bronco's sister but she wasn't really sure what that made them. As usual when it came to her twisty family tree, Meerkat made a joke. "...brother from another mother!"

Fig had always wondered what had happened to his friend. He'd worried after her, but here she was, clearly alive and whole. He was glad for his dark fur (or would've been if wolves were aware of things like blushes) as the heat rose to his cheeks at her smile. It took him a moment to realize what she was talking about, but he chuckled softly at himself when he did. "Yeah..." he said as he lowered his head to try and tame his hair with a paw, "I was... fishing." He didn't really want to explain how he trained in the water. He'd embarrassed himself enough.

His attention went to Meerkat when she spoke. It occurred to him then that they'd never met before, so he smiled and settled in to witness their meet-and-greet. He hadn't expected the sudden stab of realization in his stomach Meerkat called herself Nellie's brother from another mother. While he'd had no trouble whatsoever considering Bronco to be his brother, he was unsettled now being faced with the realization that the same relationship that made him that to Fig now made Nellie his sister.

Fig swallowed thickly and looked back at Nellie. His friend. Sister. Sister. Right. "Meerkat belongs to Towhee," he explained, "Which is to say, she belongs to Niamh and Phox too. So yes, she's our... brother." He smiled as he looked back at Meerkat with a quirked brow. Their brother. As in, they shared siblings. Sister.

Oh gee, looked like people still remembered her - even those she hadn't met before. She wondered just what had been said about her for Meerkat to be so enthusiastic about meeting her. Her expression grew a little warmer. Brother? Oh boy, as if one wasn't enough. She replied, letting her eyes roll back in fake exhaustion with a heavy sigh. She was quick to just laugh it off, stepping closer to ruffle the fur on Meerkat's head with her paw if she was allowed. Nah, you're alright, squirt. Welcome to the mess.

She turned to Figment then as he seemed embarrassed. He'd grown, hadn't he? He looked way more manly now - funny how so much changed in such a short amount of time. It felt as though they'd be grandparents in just a year or two at this pace. Well - caught anything? She asked, just genuinely curious at this point. Her smile grew tighter, more forced, at the mention of her mother. It was painful to recall their parting words, the way they'd treated each other - and Phox. Blergh. She felt her lunch bubble up, so she decided to ignore that little tidbit of the explanation as to how exactly this sibling fit into their messy family tree. She hadn't quite made the connection that, with Phox being her "step-dad" and all, it also meant Figment and she were siblings. Maybe she didn't make that connection because she'd sworn to never see Phox as a father, or even a caretaker. He was just the loser of the year, who knew when he'd be replaced again. Just Towhee? She asked instead when there was no mention of a father.

She noticed another out of place tuft of fur at Fig's side - she chuckled as she reached out with a soft; Oh hey, you got a little something over here still, lemme get that for ya. She'd nuzzle the fur into place if allowed, not one to respect someone else's personal space.

Meerkat laughed when Nellie ruffled her fur and welcomed her to the family, as if she hadn't been here all along. Her eyes danced as Nellie turned to tease Fig, Meerkat's eyes tracking her movements and noting the physical resemblance to both Niamh and Bronco. It seemed a penchant for banter ran in the family too.

"Just Towhee," the youth chirped. "She spontaneously spawned me." She winked. Of course, Meerkat knew how reproduction worked and understood that Phox and Towhee hadn't actually mated to produce her. There was a word for that. (That word was "incest," though Meerkat thought it was "insects," except spelled "in-sex," because that made some kind of sense... oh boy.) "Out of her butt," she was sure to add.

While Nellie volunteered some grooming for her messy older brother, Meerkat shared, "I was just at the caldera, talking to mom. You headed there?" Her gaze then flicked to Nellie. "How 'bout you?"

The mess. Yes, that was an excellent way of putting it. When he really considered the way his family was tied together--Redhawks, Blackthorns, and now Ostregas--it was enough to give someone a headache. He knew which ones were strung with blood versus affection, but he also knew how insignificant that really was. There wasn't a soul on earth who could tell him that Towhee wasn't his mother and that Meerkat wasn't his sister. Their relationships were some of the strongest Fig had. Niamh, in spite of her role as his stepmother, was not a mother figure to him. Bronco, however, was a brother. And Nellie... Wait, what had she just asked him?

"Nah, I'm terrible at fishing," Fig answered. He truly was terribly at fishing, not that that was why he didn't catch anything that day. He hadn't tried. His eyes trailed over to Meerkat at her next question and he gave a small nod. Fig wasn't entirely sure what Meerkat knew of her parentage, so he offered no further explanation.

Besides, suddenly (it seemed to him), Nellie was reaching for him.

His ears perked as she explained herself, the ducked backwards on his head as he stood frozen like a deer in the headlights. Unbidden, his mind raced back to following her through the mountains to the grotto (ie. her butt) and helping her out of the bush when she was trapped in the Copse (ie. her butt). His eyes shifted over to Meerkat as she spoke, though he didn't move under Nellie's soft touch. She asked him a question of some sort, and thank goodness, because it gave him something else to focus on.

"Yeah, I try not to be gone for too long with the borders still being so new," Fig explained, falling silent then to hear what Nellie's answer was.

'Guess we got that in common then. She commented with a chuckle about the whole Fig is bad at fishing part. She wasn't very good at anything in particular really - sometimes she believed she was simply the family's jester. It meant no one expected anything of her though, which felt awesome and at the same time kind of offending.

She smirked, teeth showing in a near-snarl-like manner it but was meant to show amusement. Meerkat seemed fun, if only because Nellie didn't have to teach her words like butt. In a way, she was a little proud. She stuck her nose out to dramatically sniff around her "little brother", pulling up her nose with a smile. Ah - so that's why you smell like ass. She stuck out her tongue, clearly joking - the only one not joining in on the fun was Figment for some reason. He seemed awfully serious for the occasion. surely it wasn't Nellie's fault, it had to be something else bugging him.

She shrugged at the question about heading to the Caldera. She had no idea where it was (it seemed too convenient for it to be the thing she was heading towards already), though if the whole gang was there, perhaps she'd stop by to say hi to Bronco. No one else. 'Didn't get the memo y'all moved. When no one was back at the Copse, I just kinda started wandering. She explained. Maybe Fig here can be a gentleman and escort this pretty lady there? She suggested with a wink.

It seemed Nellie would accompany Figment to the caldera, a remark which Meerkat met with a nod and a smile. That worked out well then, didn't it? She beheld her brother for a moment, noting something sort of peculiar about his expression and the way he was holding himself. Meerkat shrugged it off as Fig probably just feeling cold. He was wet and it was the middle of November, after all.

"Well, I'll see you guys later then," she said, waving a paw and turning to go before a thought hit her and she spun around again to ask Nellie, "Should I tell Bronco you'll be at the caldera?"

Fig listened to Nellie's reply to Meerkat's question with interest. He straightened a little when she mentioned he might be a gentleman and escort her back to the Caldera, though did she have to call herself pretty? He was already painfully aware of that part. Still, he was a little proud of how he kept his cool through her wink, and through Meerkat's notice of her departure. He was going to be alone with Nellie, it seemed. Maybe that was actually a good thing--he felt he might be able to chill out a little if there was no one around to notice him acting like such a fool.

Probably not though.

"I can take you back with me," Fig confirmed with a smile, turning then to look at Meerkat. "Take care of yourself, kid," he said to her, "Make good choices, and no taking candy from strangers."

It was kind of weird to know her mom and brother weren't living together in the same pack anymore. Did they have a falling out? Not that it was her business, but it didn't make her less curious. If she was going to ask about it, she'd probably ask Bronco sooner than her mother. She wasn't looking forward to seeing her again, but hey, she wouldn't stick around for long. She never really did.

Might as well - he's not the one I got beef with. She laughed confidently. She remembered Bronco, how close they'd been once. At least he'd made something of himself, she couldn't say the same about her. Should she visit? Would that be like, weird or kinda sweet? She toed the line anyway already.

She smiled a smile that always tugged more so on the right side of her face, when it appeared she'd found herself an escort. 'less the stranger is hot! She called after Figment. Yeah, no, she wasn't going to be a good influence. Meerkat seemed more than capable of figuring it all out on her own though, there really wasn't a need to mother a girl already so confident. She'd wave Meerkat goodbye before turning to Figment all smugly. So, where to, faithful escort?

Fig was curious about the beef comment, but didn't inquire further. He tucked the sentiment away as something to perhaps subtly bring about later, but he was never one to pry. He wasn't aware that her departure had been contentious, and perhaps it wasn't and he was making assumptions. He'd be interested to know, but not enough to stick his nose where it wasn't welcome.

He took Meerkat's departing nudge with a smile and a quick lick to her temple. His eyes shifted over to Nellie as she added her own advice to his and he chuckled softly. Once Meerkat had disappeared, he paused for a thoughtful moment before saying, "I don't know how I feel about her finding others to be hot." She was still so young in his eyes, in spite of the fact that she was on the cusp of adulthood.

Fig shrugged, then looked back at Nellie. They were alone now. This was... not much of an improvement for his nerves, but they did seem to be settling down the more time he spent in proximity to her. "Just South of here, not a long journey at all," Fig answered, gesturing with his muzzle as he turned and started off at a brisk trot once he knew she followed, "We've settled at Redhawk Caldera, the territory where my parents were born."

She raised a curious eyebrow at Figment. Isn't she about that age? She asked, wondering if Meerkat just looked quite mature for her actual age. Not that she cared much if it was an inappropriate comment; all pups grew up, they were all gonna know this stuff anyway and there was very little innocence left in the world. She'd only care if it got her in trouble with Meerkat's parent - be it the front end that could cuss her out or the other end from which Meerkat apparently came.

You mean that hunk of rock in the distance? I thought it was some kind of misshapen, unfortunate mountain. It looked like the place had kyphosis or something. She shrugged regardless of the answer. She didn't want to start a fuss about it, honestly, but she very much preferred the place she'd been born. It looked... claustrophobic from this distance. She cleared her throat as she trotted after Figment, lining her shoulder up with his. So, how've you been?

"Probably. I still don't like it," Fig replied easily, giving a smile. Meerkat would always be his baby sister, no matter how old she got. He preferred she stayed that way, though he knew it was inevitable that she wouldn't.

"That's exactly what it is," Fig confirmed when Nellie offered her description of the Caldera, "It's like a mountain with its head lopped off. It's not much to look at from afar, but it has redeeming qualities up close. Forests, fields, and a big lake in the center. Lots of caves to be explored." He glanced over at her, wondering if she'd remember the trip to the grotto he was referencing.

"I've been alright. What about you?" he asked, "Did the road treat you well?"

She smirked knowingly. Fig was almost acting like a dad, and that was kind of amusing. She couldn't really picture him with a bunch of pups trailing after him - a woman at his side, starting a family, and all that... Or maybe she just couldn't picture it for herself.

Hhmmm, my favourite activity. She hummed sarcastically. Still, the thought of a new forest did bring a wag to her tail and a glint to her eyes. Here she though they were living in grottos like cave people. Yuck. She'd definitely not have stayed if that had been the case.

Just alright? Come ooonn, I haven't seen you in moons, what's the tea? She giggled. She shrugged then. Same old, same old. Adventure gets tiring after a while, and it's getting cold. Rather have my butt somewhere cozy for the winter moons. She explained casually. The time had flown by while she was alone. She barely remembered if it had really happened or not. And now she was back... What did she hope to get out of this?

Why did she have to keep bringing up her butt? Fig fought not to glance her way as she said it, knowing his gaze couldn’t be trusted to not go there. ”There are definitely some cozy spots to be claimed,” he reassured her with a smile. A pause came right after, and then, because he couldn’t help himself, he asked, ”What’s tea?”

They chatted like this the rest of the way, Fig being a dork and Nellie enlightening him.
