Sleep had not come easy for Ciri when she stopped to rest deep within the bleeding forest. There, tucked away in the dark silence and sheltered by the exposed roots if a giant evergreen, the wayfaring yearling lay in quiet reflection for a time before she closed her heavy eyelids to the twittering of songbirds at dawn. When she roused from dreamless slumber the day had stretched close to noon, yet still her body screamed in protest as she gathered herself to move on.

She stepped from Ravenswood's Northern outskirts and into direct rays of the midday sun, which beamed hotly into her dark face. Ciri squinted against the light and peered out beyond the grasslands stretched for what seemed like miles before her. The shimmering sea lay far beyond, a sore reminder of a plea made to her mother when first she'd seen it from afar.

"Can we go, Mama?" Ciri had pleaded, and the memory of Nyx' promise thrummed to life: "soon, we will all go together."

Emotion swelled in her throat and she pushed forward and thought of those simpler times, when her sole desire in life was to frolic at the seaside with those she loved most. The threat of tears burned again in the swallow's eyes as she wished fiercely for those days of innocence, when she and her sister had existed peacefully, when nothing but they and theirs existed.

Her steps were careful across dry, gilded sands, and she felt the heat it held beneath the tender pads of her travel-worn paws. The scent of seasalt filled her lungs as she ventured tentatively into the water's shallows, where its chill crept closer to her belly with each rolling wave - each step that took her further into the unknown until she paused to stare out as far as she could see.

An ebony ear swivelled atop her dark crown, following the cry of a gull that swooped in the clear sky above, but her mind was elsewhere: the difference a year could make.

Once, she'd been the lion cub of Sagtannet.

Now, she had nothing - the lioness on the Edge of the World.

"And then the world started to exist again,
but it existed very differently."
