All Welcome
rumor was circulating about a big cat prowling in the east, near the sheer-faced escarpment. although phaedra was not so much an idiot as to escort herself into danger's unhinged jaws, and would avoid the cuesta itself, she couldn't help glutting her curiosity about the emerald realm below it.

the main river unspooled before her, winding through the arcaded gorge like a thread. the intrepid girl explored its stony hall, avoiding the murkwater that flowed alongside her, for fear of what might happen should it get ahold of her. instead, the girl followed its trajectory until the earthwork chiseled out into a verdant gorge awash with sunlight and birdsong.

phaedra tasted the pale wind, felt it tug at her ruff as if with purpose, such that she wove her body around the sash of it and felt bereft when it left her to rustle the leaves of trees. it told nothing of any cat, large or otherwise. coming from the north, at any rate. the daredevil in her was disappointed, heedless of the certain dangers that success would have imposed.

shortly she was bored and picked up a large stick. she whirled with the wild abandonment of a dervish, wielding her nature-forged sword, and weaponized it against the trees which bodied each blow with an echoing thunk.

Ruby pulled her mouth out of the river as she heard a thwacking sound. She ran towards the noise with water dripping from her snout. She saw the other wolf smacking a stick against a tree. She moved towards the other wolf while staying low to the ground.

She considered the wolf as it played with its stick. She considered attacking it but quickly abandoned the thought as the wolf had done nothing to her. She also dismissed the idea of approaching the wolf. She finally decided to leave it up to the wolf in front of her. The wolf had not appeared to notice her so she pawed at the ground to get its attention.

what waylaid her first was the initial shuffle of the sneaking woman. the disturbance of tree litter gave phaedra pause mid-swing, ears flocking upright. she looked up instead of around, noting self-soothingly that the birds hadn't ceased their prattle. if she had to live and die by anything, it was the gossip of the creatures that could see what she couldn't. but there was not so much as an apostrophe in their back-and-forth conversations, and phaedra dismissed the sound as nothing.

she was poised to take another swing when the sound of a paw scuff alerted her. gooseflesh; her ruff bristled, every ounce of courage draining from her cheeks. the only time she ever heard that particular noise was when there was a wrathful ungulate attached to it -- usually one inconvenience away from giving her a three-dollar haircut.

the girl whipped herself around, teeth clenching tighter on the spalled wood as soon as her scanning eyes landed on the wraithlike skulk.

oh.

she remembered herself with a little sheepish noise, her grip on the stick slackening until the great equalizer of her and tree-kind clattered completely to the ground.
ruby's presence bewildered more than alarmed her, a child more or less ignorant to the unsavory intentions of some wolves.

she felt an immediate need to justify her violence against mother nature. phaedra cleared her throat, looking more than only a bit guilty. "i was just practicing."

you know, in case she came across the cat.

a cat that totally couldn't same-day ship her to the afterlife with the slap of a paw.
