All Welcome
Day two ticked by, and the likelihood of everyone being totally sick of Wayfarer's bullshit was high. With her ear-piercing screeching whenever her brother disturbed her during feeding or when her mother dared abandon them for 15 seconds to relieve her bladder, she was most certainly proving to be a handful.

Poor neighbouring @Tzila was likely wishing for peace in the approach of her own labour and @Lane was probably thinking that she'd never conceive again, as the tawny Duskfire yowled out for the ten millionth time since birth. On this occasion, it was because the force of her own sneeze had been a surprise, and of course she was going to demand reassurance.

"After all we've been through, everything I've done,
it can't all be for nothing."

Perhaps Veteran would stand as some consolation to those with the ability to hear, because he had yet to create any noise that was louder than a pitiful whimper. At least the Duskfire Wolves didn't have two screamers on their paws.

What felt like a particularly violent, shaking object thumped against his side, startling him awake. Unknown to him, he had been roused by the force of his sister's sneeze, rocking both of their little bodies. He piped a mournful little sound, scooting away from the Shaking Thing and towards the heat radiating from the Warm Thing. He had no way of knowing how lucky he was, still several weeks away from developing his sense of hearing.

Wayfarer's cries continued in a high-pitched whine, made louder when her jaws parted. No one reached for her immediately, so she carried on crying. It quieted only when the movement of the soft, little body at her side distracted her with his own movement, and the baby Duskfire shuffled after him.

She felt her way along, pitiful with her whimpering, and as they neared the warmth of their mother's undersides her anxiety began to ease. Wriggling in close to her twin, Wayfarer drew comfort from him with the reminder of his proximity within the womb.

it can't all be for nothing."

The Shaking Thing followed him, and he was powerless to escape, cornered against the wall of flesh and fur that was the Warm Thing. Lacking both the strength to fight and the ability to flee, Veteran succumbed to the snuggles.

And.. it wasn't too bad actually. There was a comforting familiarity in the small mass against his side, even if it did shake a whole lot. And kick. He reached out to taste the Shaking Thing, tiny tongue touching down tentatively upon her crown.

To Veteran she was forever bound. It was with him alone she'd grown before they each drew in their first breaths, and with him she felt most safe. Wayfarer pushed her face to his neck and shared his warmth, which calmed her considerably.

Her tiny tongue poked between her lips as she very suddenly felt the pull of sleep, but she resisted. Her brother moved, reached with his blunt snout to brush her brow, and with a curious little peep she moved to nibble awkwardly at him with her toothless maw.

She tasted different-- lovely, but different. Not like either of the large, Warm Things; she had an essence that was all her own, and yet somehow Veteran felt there was also a piece that belong to him. His.

Veteran felt the little mouth on him, no longer shaking. He licked at her crown again, fiercely. It was, perhaps, the first time he had done anything that could be described in a way other than pathetically. And Wayfarer had brought it out of him.

She was tired. She was always tired. The little Duskfire felt herself nod off here and there, lulled by warmth and comfort, but the movement of her brother beside her jerked her back to reality each time.

He nudged at her head, reached to taste her, but she was too little to understand if there was any meaning behind the gesture. Wayfarer simply accepted it, and was once more tempted by slumber as she Nestled in close to Veteran's downy furs and began to doze.

For the first time, Veteran conceptualized his sister as a companion rather than an obstacle. He snuggled against her, tucking his nose into the downy fur behind Wayfarer's neck. Wayfarer had become still, and so nothing remained tying Veteran to the realm of wakefulness. He descended into slumber, continuing forward in life a little less lonely.
