mahler made that day another of his infamous decisions, which was to say that he consulted no one.
when midday began to descend into dusk, the gargoyle looked for @Ciri. rivenwood was changing in hue. several times the man stopped only to contemplate the stability and the loveliness that the noctisardor had always given to its wolves.
a promised land, and like the patriarch in the old writing, he too would not enter.
mahler felt as though he did not know, and so rushed to make his peace with that dark and satined embrace.
his tail all the same swayed as he looked for her; mahler would not let any of his moments be spent in vain.
mahler had come to the conclusion that ciri should know what might be his fate, and that phaedra should not.
phaedra had her mother. she was not a foolish girl, but mahler saw no reason to crush her beneath such news.
ciri had neither mother nor sister. for this reason she must be privy to all truths.
he had agonized over this choice as a display of preference, protection given instead of knowledge. but wylla did not seem inclined to tell what he had said. they held it between them, they too, and mahler felt that perhaps now it was not his place to inform their daughter.
mahler still did not know what a place rivenwood might yet be — his thoughts were for a future that he did not believe he might behold. without him, ciri would be alone.
mahler stopped and drew a harsh, choking breath — and now he did not want to say anything at all! to keep them both in ignorance of this plague until it was too late; his thoughts came undone and he lost his resolve to speak.
for too harshly did his heart ache for his child, for all she had suffered and all she might now.
