All Welcome
Clouds broke across the skies, streaking over the darkness that was on its way in.

From the rendezvous spot, Samani had traveled north toward the heart of the wind scent. She had prowled across the terrain of Moonglow delicately, each stride that carried her away from her family was done so with the utmost care. The young figure knew that she would need to return, that she could not spend too much time away from the watchful eyes of her kin.

Samani had developed a taste for venturing, was all.

The sunset wolf continued her trek until she felt she had gone far enough. She stopped, admiring the scenery nearest to her before letting her eyes look beyond. All she knew was Moonglow. One day, she would know more of the world.

The figure drew forth, gray-cast beneath the clouds, her limbs extended as far as they could go to catch the wind; at the last moment, they tucked towards her sides and she dove with talons splayed, disappearing. The sound of struggle came, and she emerged to find somewhere to roost, a weasel clutched in her fists.

The sound of wings beating against air turned the young wolf’s attention. Her eyes caught the movement of a diving bird just moments before it had swooped down on the earth, claws stretched, and then lifted with a slender figure dangling in its clutches. Samani was breathless as she gazed upon the magnificent creature and its power.

The moon child began to run.

Her legs carried her swiftly across the earth. The beating of her heart increased until she was huffing plumes of her breath into the air. Samani didn’t want to lose sight of the owl. She wanted to see where it would go and if she might be able to speak to it.

Oblivious to the earthbound child, Aniuk was busy plucking at the length of brown fur wedged between her talons and the pine branch. She'd grabbed it just after the neck, causing her fist to pierce the lungs, and the rest of the body hung limp and dripping various fluids in to the snow.

The child came bounding over, their steps in time with the drip drip drip of the mustelid. Aniuk peeled a ribbon of fur off of the creature and dropped it quickly, then began to pull bits of meat free of the spine, swallow down a peck of liver, and so on.

Samani could smell blood upon the snow, and she felt her heart quicken. The pace she had set increased until she found where the feathered hunter was perched, feasting on its spoils. The moon child marveled at it, padding to where she could see red splotched against white. Her nose knew the scent of blood. When she had drawn close enough, her steps became light and gentle atop the snow.

The girl’s jade gaze shifted up to the bird. A bloodied drop fell to her nose, and she licked it away quickly. Hoping that the owl would not depart, she lapped at the bloodied snow on the ground until she had melted it down several inches. When she had finished cleaning what she could find, Samani looked back up to the marvelous hunter.

The child was curious. It was not the first that she had seen through her many years. This one looked spry and soft, with big eyes, the kind that looked at the world plainly.

The meal was hardly anything for the owl, surely nothing of interest to the girl, but after a pondering moment the owl let loose her talons; the remains dropped across the girl below.

A bloody, tattered scarf.

The winged hunter released the tattered remains of its kill. Samani watched them fall to her, dangling morbidly from her lean frame. She turned and pulled the bits away – a string of red with very little meat on it. The moon child sniffed cautiously at it before she determined it was no harm to her. She licked at the bloody bits and then drew her gaze back to the pale hunter who sat overhead.

Samani wished to speak to the bird, but she was not certain it could talk. She also did not want to disturb it and make it leave. After all, it had hunted successfully and had shared the blood of its kill with her. The young girl believed that it had been a rather special moment. She would tell her mother of the animal later.

The moon child bowed down, wagging her tail. Would the pale hunter take flight again?

The remains could be tanned, if the child wished that of her mother. The owl had seen many things in her time and she wondered what would become of this child, or the gift that was given.

The child looked at her, and together with the owl there was a moment of shared understanding. She knew better than to think this cub held any of the secret knowledge, yet the way their eyes glimmered made her wonder.

She watched the wag of the child's tail for a few beats, and then turned away. In the coming moments her wings spread and she dropped from the branch, sweeping low enough to reach for that tail with her talons if she chose, and then up and away.

So swift and silent, until only the white of her belly feathers could be seen, melding with the bright sky.

The moon child watched with wonder as the white hunter spread its wings. It was unlike anything she’d ever seen before. Grace embodied, the white owl swooped down. Samani did not shy away from it, though the hunter’s talons caught her eye. The moon child could not help herself. She watched intently, unable to pull her gaze away from the magnificent creature.

It swooped and then rose, white into blinding light.

Samani watched, squinting her eyes against the glimmer of the light. She was losing sight of it. The child trotted in the direction she had watched, eyes trained to the heavens. The owl had likely ventured to hunt on other grounds. The moon child did not wish to say goodbye, not yet.

She would chase the ground beneath the owl for as long as her legs would allow it.

As the owl watched, the child swept across the snow to follow them. It was a surprise that they were so deft, so animated; they left behind the bloody scarf where it had dropped and seemed more interested in Aniuk, who climbed and climbed in to the white.

She called down as loudly as she could, so that the sound could carry to the terrestrial child:
Alok, sul-ronaaz!!

It would mean nothing to the girl, but was a moment of fascination to the owl — and as she turned in the air to depart for good, she thought, perhaps I will return to see how far you fly.

The owl called down. Samani howled in return.

The moon child did not know what the great white hunter had said, but she had felt a movement in her soul. A smile curved her features as she slowed her pace, watching until the shape of the mighty owl disappeared from her sights. She imagined that it would fly until it had found somewhere peaceful to hunt again.

The young figure padded her way back to the remains that had been left. She collected them and carried them back to her den. It was a special gift, one she would treasure.
