To serve as a soldier

Colors:  #7C54CC¬† #49CA9C

Current Location: Redsand Canyon, Sunspire Mountains
The canyon is a rare and splendid site. Spires of red rock have been formed by years of strong winds into smooth contours, creating a labyrinth of narrow passageways closely hugged by marbled rock formations. Depending on the time of day, the canyon can appear red, orange, or even purple. It's said that a wolf larger than any known wolf lives within the canyon, but whether it's just a story for the wet ears of misbehaving pups or a fearsome truth is yet to be confirmed.

Current Leadership:
Germanicus, Imperator (1/03/2022‚ÄĒpresent)
Ruenna, Matrona (1/03/2022‚ÄĒpresent)

Ruenna experiences chronic lower back pain as a result of an accident from over a year ago. She moves with a very obvious, heavy limp.

Mereo exists as a strict military outpost within Redsand Canyon. The location is strategic, chosen so that most of the traffic through the Sunspire region may be observed and influenced by the soldiers. This pack serves as an extension of Akashingo, although the wolves of Mereo do not directly answer to Akashingo's pharaoh. The soldiers of Mereo will be allowed to mingle with Akashingo wolves, seek shelter at the mesa, enter when they wish, and avail themselves of Akashingo's fellahin. Wolves who rise high enough in the ranks of Mereo will unlock the possibility of being assigned to the palace on a rotating basis.

Mereo is intended to be a true neutral concept. There is no strict adherence to the tenants of good or evil; there is only discipline. Rank movement in Mereo will slowly progress. Whatever skills or training your wolf receives in Mereo is theirs to utilize as they will. Germanicus is a firm and severe leader when necessary, and will not tolerate war-making or conflict that is not directly his command.

The soldiers of Mereo travel often. Although the base lies within the canyon, soldiers may expect to be called to travel at any moment, in any weather and over any terrain.

The story of Mereo is plot and character driven. There will not be a lot of OOC planning on the parts of the PMs, and all players are encouraged to introduce and develop whatever plot points they see fit. We can't wait to see what you come up with!

The hierarchy within Mereo is divided; the soldiers are known as auxilia and answer to the Imperator, their commanding officer. Civilians answer to the Matrona. Hierarchically, the civilian tier exists as the lowest tier in Mereo, but truly civilians are considered to be entirely separate from the ranked auxilia. Soldiers are expected to treat civilians (the Matrona in particular) with respect.

Breeding rights are restricted inside Mereo, and only established couples may seek permission to breed. Auxillia are not allowed to mate-- even outside the bounds of Mereo-- without first seeking permission breed (likely to be denied), and they will face punishment for breaking this rule. Auxilia who become pregnant will be demoted to the civilian rank of Plebian during gestation, and they may only return as active auxilia after their pups have been weaned. Auxilia who have children in Mereo are expected to assume extra hunting shifts until the children reach six months of age, and these extra shifts will come at the expense of the training sessions required for promotion.

Care for any children born inside Mereo is coordinated by the Matrona. Civilians assume the primary responsibility for child care and instruction, and upbringing is focused on laying the groundwork for mercenary and hunter trades so children may be prepared to become auxilia at six months of age.

MILITARY RANKS

CENTURIO

Imperator - two trades, working on mastery

Pilus - two trades, working on mastery

COHORT III

Any of the COHORT III ranks are challengeable once every three months. This opportunity is open to anyone ranked as legatus, and movement inside this tier between the three ranks can also be based on challenges. Alternatively, someone can capitulate or surrender their rank. These challenges can be settled between players through dice or OOC agreement. The assumption is that all of mereo gathers to watch these spars.

Elitus - In order to occupy this rank, you must have at least one trade. specialty strongly suggested. achievement of this rank means your character is eligible to be assigned in akashingo as a palace guard. a one month tour as palace guard is a requirement if you intend to make leadership.

Triarius - Complete two new threads demonstrating competency as a tactician to be eligible to hold this rank.

Praefectus - Complete two new threads demonstrating competency as a guardian to be eligible to hold this rank.

COHORT II

Legatus - Once this rank is achieved, you may state your claim to the next rank either through verbal proof or a spar with anyone occupying that rank. If you choose to hold a conversation in front of the other soldiers, at least two others must agree that you should be moved up.

Tribunus - Complete five or more new threads with packmates, three of which should show a working toward mercenary or hunting to be eligible for this rank.

Scutarius - Complete three new threads demonstrating interaction with packmates to be eligible for this rank. At least one should demonstrate efforts to build mercenary or hunting skills.

COHORT I

Principales - Complete three or more threads with packmates, sparring/patrolling or anything else to be eligible for this rank.

Auxiliary - All auxilia are ranked here for one month.

Challenges may be handled behind-the-scenes through OOC votes/discussion or mutual agreement, as well as through one or two-round threads that assume everyone in mereo is present.

CIVILIAN RANKS

Residents of Mereo who are not active auxilia are civilians. Hierarchically, the civilian tier exists as the lowest tier in Mereo, but truly civilians are considered to be entirely separate from the ranked auxilia. Civilians do not have the option of climbing in the ranks. They exist in Mereo either on a temporary basis or to serve a very specific function.

The civilian tier is designed to support the overall concept of Mereo as a military operation first and foremost, which is why the structure is simplified to just the three possible ranks.

Matrona - The Matrona is appointed by the Imperator to manage the civilians and coordinate their efforts. Just as the auxilia answer to the Imperator, so the civilians answer to the Matrona. The Matrona is responsible for coordinating medical care, childcare, and other domestic tasks by either taking care of these things personally or appointing them to other civilians.

Plebian - Plebians are civilians in Mereo who are over the age of six months. Wolves hold the Plebian rank either on a temporary basis (such as in the case of a soldier who becomes ill, injured, or pregnant) or because they serve some specific function (e.g. a medic). In some cases, children who have aged past six months may hold the Plebian rank until they decide to either join the auxilia or disperse elsewhere.

Pupus - Children under the age of six months hold the Pupus rank. Children will receive instruction coordinated by the Matrona and centered heavily on the mercenary and hunting trades in preparation for initiation into the auxilia at six months of age. If the child is not interested in or inclined toward soldiering, efforts will be made to apprentice the child outside of Mereo.
