All Welcome
Numbness had set into the young wolf’s paws. Emmerich grimaced at the touch of it, hungry to return home and curl up in the dark of the den. He had done all he could to remain vigilant on the borders of their small pack. The taste of winter had only deterred him slightly.

Squinting into the breeze, Emmerich took a moment to convince himself of one more patrol. His frame swayed slightly against the wind. The thought of home sang like a siren through the trees. Battling with himself for what felt like ages, the white-hooded boy finally stepped forward.

One more patrol.

The snow was a bright white glare in Dusty Rose's eyes. His long legs broke through the drifts with ease, but his body was more cumbersome to push along. He was cold — he had never been so cold in his life, and had never imagined he could be so cold.

Even so, he was enjoying himself. There was a bright sparkle in his dark blue eyes as he navigated the territory, looking for a new pile of snow to roll around in. The cold seemed to erase their scents even more quickly than the sun had back in the desert, but Dusty was well suited to the arduous task. Mindless Fixation was practically his middle name!

"Emmerich!" he called when he caught sight of a white hood among whiter background. The youth stopped walking and began a series of high leaps to make it to his young pack mate more quickly. "You've got some great camouflage! As long as you're hip-deep in it, anyway!"

The coywolf's brushy tail wheeled in friendly greeting, and Dusty tried to poke his snipey nose into Emmerich's scruff to see where he'd been and who he'd seen and what he'd been up to. And partially because he liked to poke at the younger wolf — he thought he could beat him in a wrestling match, but that probably wouldn't be the case for long. He had to take advantage of this opportunity while he could!

But instead of outright challenging the wolf, Dusty Rose merely made himself as attractive a target as he could — by being pokey and insufferably upbeat.

A familiar voice drew the boy’s yellow squinted eyes toward a springy figure. Their numbers were small in Paleo but even if that were not true, Emmerich could not have forgotten the rust-pointed coy. Their introduction had been a peculiar thing. It had been surprising that Mahler had allowed the funny stranger to join their numbers. It turned out that Dusty Rose had done well for himself as a hunter.

Hey, Dusty Rose, Emmerich answered in a gruff voice. His expression reflected his appreciation for the weather. The young wolf looked positively miserable. Parts of his internal dialogue were still trying to convince him to turn back and go nap away the bite of cold. Maybe if he had company…

Dusty Rose thought that Emmerich blended with the snow. The young wolf smirked and breathed a laugh through his nose in a puff of air. He didn’t shy away from the coy’s snout which sniffed at his nape and hunted for scents that were carried in the young boy’s pelt.

What have you been doing? Enjoying the snow? Dusty Rose didn’t seem perturbed by it, at all.

The younger wolf bore Dusty's prodding without rancor, apparently content to put up with him, for the time being. That was sweet, he thought, except he'd sorta been looking for a bit of a dust-up. That was okay, though; there was always tomorrow!

"I suppose," he agreed, looking out at the snow in quiet admiration. "I've never seen snow like this before." He remembered that Emmerich probably hadn't either, since up until recently, he had not actually existed. It made him turn his gaze on his packmate with a similar appreciation as he had for the snow.

"You look miserable," he noted, still sounding quite chipper himself. "What's all that fluff for if it ain't good for snow?" the coywolf asked, making a snap for said fluff and then hopping back a few quick steps. His brushy tail wheeled in friendly challenge.

Me neither, the white-hooded boy admitted with a small frown at their surroundings. Dusty looked fine in it, though that might have just been how he looked about everything. They were both getting to share in the first of winter. Emmerich wondered if the coy missed his family and wished that he could be nearer to them. He seemed chipper enough, though there was no telling if that was accurate to how he felt.

When Dusty Rose commented on his appearance, the young wolf’s hawkish eyes danced up to his companion’s pointed face. There was some play in the coy. He wanted to scrap, maybe. Emmerich was pleased to do it. It would get his body worked up, warmed by the motion.

Bowing down quickly, Emmerich waved his tail in the air in a taunting way. Before Dusty might try to get him, the white-hooded youth pushed forward and aimed to tackle the wiry body into the snow.
