All Welcome
Something had been here.

Now it was gone. Prophet plucked through the stale remnants. Whatever village had been here in the earlier months had vanished.

But he imagines it was not famine that pushed them along. For herds still roamed the taiga and he had just heard of hunters here. If sickness had existed here, it had not reached the Rise.

So what is it?

A fleeting thought that he realized did not matter. @Avicus might be further relieved to know they did not contend for the taiga. He also had half a thought to drag @Lilia across the land with him — and she very well may have followed either way. Scout that she seemed to become.

Thoughts he held as he dug out the old remains of a den.

*snatches this* I rolled a 2/10 in terms of how sneaky she can be lol. FAIL

Lilia's boldness grew, as did her need to prove herself. Her new favourite hobby was finding someone's scent and following them until she could see them...And then see how close she could get. So naturally, when she was patrolling and found her guardian's scent leading out of the pack, she huffed and followed after it. He hadn't even invited her! She'd show him. She'd sneak right up on him and scare the whiskers off of him.

He was heading toward the river that flowed out from the mountains. She hadn't explored much past that area, but she knew the way relatively well. Plus, Prophet was already out here, and she couldn't be too far behind. If anything happened, she could just scream and he'd come running.

Nevertheless, the journey was uneventful, and when she found herself drawing closer, she slowed down and began to sneak a bit. Ahead, she could see just his hindquarters sticking out of a den. How funny would it be if she was able to trounce him and pull his tail? She laughed.

Well, it would've been funny, if she hadn't just given herself away.

She slipped forward, uttering a soft, curious woof. What was up with this den? Why was it here, and why was Prophet interested in it?

Laughter.

His ears slicked back as he pulled himself free of the den. Red eyes snapped to the familiar form of Lilia. Any sense of danger felt washed away for the moment.

He beckoned her closer.

Something used to be here. He informed her softly. Some things have been left behind. Not much, but all is good in the cold. Advice as much as a warning of the cold too. It seemed here to stay finally.

We should find the things that are useful and take them home, hm?

Was she up for the task?

Brazenly, she ventured forward when he said that someone else had been living here. She sniffed, the guard hairs along her nape bristling. She growled softly. This was a bit too close to their own pack's borders for her comfort, for wolves who did not exist as peaceful neighbours like the wolves of Sapphique. Scraps of bones were left behind, signs that the wolves here had thrived, living off the prey in the area. "Who wath it?" She asked, sounding lightly offended that they potentially hadn't declared themselves.

But going through their leftovers and trying to find things that were useful? Heck yes, she'd find things, and she'd bet that she'd find something that they might miss. She grunted lightly, and began to sniff and scout around the area, looking for another cache or den that they might have used. Cold held things in place, and kept them from rotting. Bones and bits of feathers and furs were scattered around.

She wandered without a tether until she found another place that appeared to have been someone's sleeping place. A well-worn divet in the earth, and when she investigated and pawed through a light layer of snow, she woofed in surprise. Fur. The skin of some animal, used for bedding at the time.

Hunters.

He trailed behind her path. His voice a distasteful grumble. The one he met had not been the worst thing ever, but more hunters meant more prey picked off. They could not have that.

You understand the taiga is better as just ours, don't you?

He heaved free a bone that had been scratched by teeth. Marked, small and large. He left it by his paws as he turned his gaze to see what she had freed.

She growled. She dug away at the pelt that she'd found, and grabbed it by a corner, pulling it away from the frozen earth. When she did, she was surprised to see that it was a deerpelt- and that it had not only been left, but it had been crafted. The meat and fat had been stripped away, and the soft (albeit now frozen) pelt had likely been a carpet for someone's sleeping area. She placed a paw on it and growled. "Mine."

The girl came from rags, but she was scrappy and possessive.

His question made her make a face. She snorted, in affirmation. Of course the taiga was better just as theirs. She looked over to see the bone he'd unearthed, and snuck toward him so that she could sniff it, and eye up the toothmarks as well. "You think juth-t a couple'a wolvth wath heaw, or you fink there wath a pack?"

He had half a mind to physically force her to share, to tell her it could only be theirs. That whatever they brought back should belong to Redtail Rise as a whole.

Yet he wondered if it might do her good. To have some sense of selfishness and desire to work to protect whatever she thought was hers.

A pack. He informed her with a disinterested snort. Mark the place well as we go. This was an order and a lesson in one.

If they return for some reason, we will remind them that the taiga is ours. Will you be up to the task?

A brow hitched high and sharp above red eyes.

She felt his hesitance, and prepared herself to have to fight for the item she'd declared as her property. But Prophet had a fondness for her, and the determination set in her features seemed to have convinced him to allow her this one souvenir. It was just as well- she might've launched a fit if he'd tried to take it from her.

She was an obedient pupil, however, and with a deft nod she set about raking her claws against the hard earth, scuffing it with her hind feet, and squatting to leave more scent markings in the areas that the other wolves had seemed to settle into the most. If they came back looking for their densite, they would find the warning signs. When questioned, she sent a cold look to her guardian, and nodded sharply.

fade? <3

She continued to show her promise.

Each day that she thrived, his concern for having ever taken her in faded. He only hoped that it would stay such a way. That his pride in her would never be misplaced.

But if it ever was, who did he blame?

Himself or the girl?

He swung his muzzle to motion her onward. There had to be more to ransack and mark upon before they headed back to the Rise.

sure <3

She felt her greet satiated as they moved along, scouting the area for other markings and items left behind by the pack of hunters, destroying what she found if it wasn't decent enough to rob. She enjoyed the destruction, and enjoyed covering up their markings with her own; it was like reclaiming a kingdom that hadn't been hers to begin with, truthfully.

But all the land the light touched would be hers one day- and she would start by ransacking this place.
