RIP
It had been a normal, average day. Leona had done her lessons. She had spent an afternoon with her mother, and even been welcome to a patrol with her father. She was especially excited for that. It wasn't a rare thing, but Leona loved to be a protector - It made her feel more at home, as if they hadn't left Mereo, and for a few hours every day Leona could at least pretend to be a warrior.

She was growing better at it, too. Soon she would be welcome to patrol alone! That was worth shoving in Jack's face. Her patrol route this time was opposite Maxim: a short path along the trees and over a ledge. She had done it plenty of times before.

Maybe she wasn't looking where she was going? Maybe it was particularly cold and slippery, she wouldn't ever know - Maybe she moved too fast? But one moment she was racing along the familiar path, and the next she was weightless, falling. It happened fast. Her head connected with stone, and her body was a bundle, like a spider curling up, legs tucked; at the bottom was a pile of snow, and she was there half-buried, streaked with red.
