All Welcome
the moon was nearly full as xtabay lurked through the shadows; a comfortable space for the umbra. she looked up to the glimmering darkness with a sigh. the fondness she had for a clear night sky was dampened by one individual. the words he first infatuated la xtabay with were of the stars.

to organize these thoughts she had slipped away into the late night, choosing to sit and merely gaze at the shining firament. the life she had chosen now would always have her faith, loyalty, and service. this was a evening where she was grateful to have it.

Time has passed and the Winak remains on the fringes of Tikal, performing simple duties set by Ajaw and others. Though she cannot bring herself to be angry at them; it is the way things work round here and she enjoys the new sense of purpose the work brings. Moreso the distaste brewing within her is for her own skin, and the situation she finds herself more and more at war with.

It is something akin to loneliness she realises she feels - and seeing the trust and bonds the Holcan have with one another only pains her even more.

Her thoughts keep her pacing deep into the night until shadow-woman's scent floats by and she finds herself following almost with absent mind.

She chuffs a quiet greeting, hoping Xtabay wouldn't mind the company.

a silent step. xtabay had thought as the winak announced herself. unaware of her presence until that moment; thinking on that point, she beckoned the winak to walk with her. she seemed to be a presence the umbra could tolerate, most were not.

❝evening,❞ she offered a soft utterance.

what was there to know of the enigmatic woman?

Moonlight bathes the shadow Holcan as she approaches; the Winak studies the way it transforms her fur into something akin to the twinkling of stars up above.

An invitation then - she falls into step beside Xtabay in silent acceptance, though she remains a whisker behind.

The silence is deafening - she wishes to break it but cannot bring herself to disturb the peace that Xtabay seems to find that night.

It is a tiny sigh of relief that accompanies the quiet greeting in the tongue of Tikal. She does not know much, but the basics she is beginning to acquire are enough.

"Xtabay can't sleep also?" She ponders what the Holcan seeks during starlight.

❝no. you can't?xtabay putting effort into a conversation was rare, but here she was attempting to communicate to the winak.

the shadow continued to slink through the night as she glanced backwards towards the woman. she was rather pretty as she continued to recover, xtabay had thought it too.

you look better.❞ there were few gaps within her common, but she hoped the winak could fill them.

The language barrier doesn't seem to bother her as they walk. She is more grateful to have respite from her own thoughts and the labours of Tikal, and she can piece together Xtabay's meaning well enough by tone and expression.

Her head shakes in response to the query. "Too much-" she pauses, "-too much up here." Feeling the Holcan's eyes on her, lifts her paw briefly towards her ear as if pointing to her skull. Would Xtabay relate?

The next comment catches her off guard; a warmth prickles in her belly. She wants to squash the feeling like a bug.

"Ajaw's land feeds us well," she offers a small smile. Then, an afterthought, speech slow as she searches for the right sounds, "Xtabay teach Caro words of Tikal?"

her wall came down; even if it was by a little. a pained smile graced the umbra's face when the winak had spoken. xtabay nodded in response, all of this to her first words. she knew this feeling and well.

❝I understand.❞ the shadow murmured.

and yes, i will. la xtabay huffed, edges of her mouth hardly a smile.

this one already had pieces of her others did not. though the dark woman couldn't decide how to feel about it.

Relief washes over the Winak as she studies Xtabay's response. It is a nice feeling to be understood, even if the shadow woman's reason for relating eludes her yet.

Xtabay agrees to teach her and her features soften, letting her tail wag gently

"Thank you," she speaks in earnest, perhaps to both statements.

The pair approach a dip in the redrock, smooth and pooled with water turned silver in the moonlight. She slips into its cooling embrace, turning eyes to the Holcan in a silent invitation for the dark woman to join her.

so sorry for the long wait! so many life changes recently. still would love more threads with these two i love where this one has gone :3

oddly enough, la xtabay smiled to her as the winak offered a thanks. then they had reached a dip in their path where water pooled. the stars reflected on the surface of the water, rippling as the woman stepped in. she was a most bewitching woman, xtabay had thought.

and yet, the invitation was accepted and xtabay's tail stirred as she slowly stepped towards her. the lissome shadow dipped into the starlight beside the winak. blue moons watched the momentary companion with a softness they did not usually hold. a friend was not something the penumbra had ever had, but ebbs and flows of emotions this night made her think of this fuscous woman in that light.

no need to apologise <3 I'd love another too!

Golden eyes watch with a certain intensity as Xtabay slips beside her, drinking in the way the water ripples and pools and clings to her, revealing muscles usually hidden under midnight fur. In some ways it usurps the idea that Holcan are nothing but stoic acolytes of Ajaw; in that gentle release of a moment, she sees something new.

For now, nothing else matters.

In a puppyish sequence of events, her paw lifts and lowers, splashing an arc of droplets in Xtabay's direction. The chill of the night barely registers as she draws closer to her companion, offering a half-hearted apologetic lick to her cheek, should she allow it.

a quiet shriek followed the small splash and while she fully expected to freeze under the affection, she responded to it like one might respond to being tickled. xtabay laughed and pulled away, only to look back with a mischievously tinted gaze. another splash followed the winak's, this time from the holcan.

❝so, your real name?❞ she asked, laughter still following her words.

perhaps she took a stance on names like her ajaw did. if not, they would exchange under this starry night and xtabay would remember fondly.

A grin is flashed Xtabay's way as the nightwoman pulls back, for she has an idea of what's to come next. Still, the sensation of water to the face is not something she was prepared for!

Emerging from the ordeal with a gasp, gold eyes shoot daggers at Xtabay, though they hold no real malice, and soon she too is giggling until almost breathless.

Words break the playful silence - she comes to rest at her companion's flank, muzzle dripping starlit droplets onto dark fur.

"Caro is my only name," she speaks with a newfound softness, "My father's choice."

"And you? How many names do you have?" a smirk graces her lips.
