All Welcome
she had chased the ice as far as she could. it would be some time before true winter followed. she knew that turning back was an option that might stave off her hunger, because turning north again would take her somewhere familiar, but it was not familiarity that she wished for now. her's was a common quest: to seek out new places and new peoples, to find herself among them, and to make a new life.

the sea was all she had left. she followed the edge of the world without realizing how easily stranded she could become: seeing the water recede from a band of earth and thinking nothing of this change, kaamos bridged the gap; long strides carrying her to where the trees were golden, though not for much longer, and when she finally deigned to look over her shoulder, the bridge had been swallowed by the sea.

A woman had come. One coated in pale shades and bigger and taller then Malakai in all manners. He was, after all too, still a child. A child which had taken the mantle as the speaker of this island, a Missionary for those who came to seek and to listen.

He watched her stride the sandbar that connected the island to the mainland and when she was standing on the beach of Sweetharbor, Malakai was striding into her direction.

Welcome to the holy land that is Sweetharbor, traveler. He greets, his voice clear and firm, yet not unfriendly. Perhaps God believed those who remained here were ready to open their doors to the world again. To bring new life into this quiet place.

she listened to the sea. there was only the lulling of the waves to meet her ears. when there came the sound of sand being shifted underfoot, she turned her head and caught the boy in her eye; he seemed welcoming, and young, and somehow affixed here as if he belonged.
a tall, racy body with the striated coat of a creature accustomed to salt, barely bothered as he crossed the sand to meet her. he looked both wild and peaceful.
holy? he had named this place sweetharbour; in what way was it holy? her interest was caught.
It is a nice island; what is holy here? she did not mean it to be rude, and had a habit of being direct. there was nothing to be wary of within the boy; perhaps then, this was her own confidence showing.

The woman before him held onto a related confidence. She did not know his meaning of 'holy' but was open with curiosity to know. It pleased Malakai, to have someone new come here with want to learn more. God must have guided her path here. When Malakai smiled, it was one of rare sincerely.

It really is. He said with a waving tail then, his eyes sweeping over the coast, the greenhills, the lavender fields in the distance, then back to her and in doing so, realized that her very eyes were the color of those lavender fields.

literally malakai

It is a place where God's people come together. Whether drawn here to learn of him or to continue living in his light among those of shared faith. Then, after a pause, My name is Malakai Michael Redhawk.

hello, ah, I am only Kaamos, she dips her head and takes that second to gather more information; the scents upon him, if any, his health, his weaknesses.

when she finds little sign of others, she blinks and relaxes further. i do not come for faith, she admits freely but food, shelter, and maybe home? or to see, and learn. exploration alone was a fine pursuit.

what could she hope to learn here, she wonders? a lone boy on an island is an odd find.

A name. A single, plain name and not one named after those of known faith. She was a foreigner, a woman who came for no faith or the knowledge of God. Whatever disappointed Malakai held he did not let it show. God opened his arms to all, offering love and eternal life to those which believed, worshipped and did right by him. Malakai, despite him begrudgingly doing so at times, would do the same.

We could start with those things. He said, his smile still holding. And, His nose crinkled as he admit it, I could use a good hunter. With little predators here, there was plenty of food! It was just the manner of catching it, which Malakai was still slacking on.

hunting! I can, yes. as she said this kaamos looked up the beach, down the beach, to the tree line, estimating things. wondering.

then she looked to the boy.
who can speak for you? a mother, a father? feeling it was odd to rely on the decision of a child; not that she wasn't grateful for this exchange.

She agreed and began to look around. Curious, wondering. Malakai watched her questioningly, which he needed only do a short moment before she revealed what (really who) she was looking for.

Oh. Right.

He was just a six month old kid. Something he even forgot sometimes, given the chaos which he and his siblings had been thrown into at such a very young age. What chaos his parents had been thrown into, who both had been young first time parents themselves.

He pondered a time. Silence filling the moments. At first, he wanted to lash out with an anger. One which he knew would be most unbecoming. Kai often did his best to hold his inner thoughts. Ones often filled with rage, disgust, greed and self righteousness. God most certainly would not approve and it was he only who's approval which he sought. And this woman here? She sought the approval of his parents. While Kai hated to be belittled in such a manner, understood that she didn't want to traipse into someone's territory with the threat of protective parents hunting her down. She wouldn't need worry of that...

No. He finally said. His single word flat, a frown in his features. No parents. They were both gone, now. Mother had returned to John and the girls. Simeon... Kai wasn't sure. He smelt him, but hadn't seen him, unknowing that he was finding atonement in the Lion's Den, same as their father before his death. It's just @Nakano and I. He's my mentor. He followed my parents before.... His frowned deepened and he turned away, his gaze fixed upon the lavender fields where his father was now freshly buried. I don't want to talk about it.

How odd.

A boy without parents, on an empty island, who claimed faith above all. Did he offer her a home because she could hunt? She looked upon him in a new light; something bordering on pity, or worry, which flashed across her face so briefly that maybe he wouldn't even notice.

Only two? She mused - more to herself. A boy, a guardian; she wouldn't ask for details. He seemed to wall himself off.

A brief smile, if you could call the twitch of her lips that. I am happy to hunt for you if it means I can rest here. If your friend -- Nakano, -- if they wish me to go, I go.

No questions.

But he did notice. The worry. The pity. Kai's frown only deepened, yet he said nothing. He did not want to be pitied and yet he was smart enough to realize every reason why someone would pity him.

Okay. Malakai would agree, placing a smile to his features and a waving of his tail which remained level behind him. Stay as long as you'd like. And maybe, one day, she would think of it as her own little sanctuary too.

Allow me to show you around?

Can fade here?

perfect!

She would like to stay so long as there was food and shelter, and the boy did not yet run her off, so she would stay a long while. He was smiling at her, his tail waving, as he gave his invitation.
Kaamos nodded and pressed a smile to her own lips, although it did not suit her face.
Thank you. And she would follow.
