The ocean at night becomes a mirror of black. Between himself and God, something has ended.

God is bitter. The world has failed Him. Either provoked or weary, the boy cannot know. He wants now to be left alone; and the boy must give up turning to him for revelation.

Above the sea, over the canopy of that forgotten den in the green hills, the great entity in which all life was made possible becomes only the darkness of sky.

The boy lies with his father and watches the empty air. From within himself grows that same coldness, disgrace, barrenness.
