Weetzie thought he knew the native plants well. He could identify which ones were edible, which ones were medicinal, and which ones were poisonous. He could also remember where he found them. He could usually even figure out new plants that he had never encountered by comparing them to the ones he was already familiar with.
However, he had never before seen anything that looked or smelled even remotely like a palm tree. The plant was an enigma to him with its long, tall trunk topped with huge leafy fronds. He thought it might be something like a giant fern with its leaves way out of reach. Its fruit also captured his curiosity as he found some of them around the bases of the strange trees. He noticed that the fruit grew at the top of the tree along with leafy fronds. He couldn’t help wondering how much damage they would do to a coywolf’s head when falling from so high.
The sea was calm, and sunlight glistened on the water. Weetzie stopped at the base of one of the strange trees and sniffed at a coconut lying on the ground near it. He wondered if it was edible and imagined it bearing something like a giant walnut, although its scent was completely different. He tentatively pawed at the shell and found that it although it was fibrous, it also felt solid, and he doubted that he could break it open. He wondered if it would even be worth trying.

The woman could not quite shake her wandering habits, it seemed, though as she reasoned now they had a purpose. With Snowe in her care, and winter looming over them like a wraith waiting to strike, she needed all the herbs she could find on such short notice. The sandy earth shifted under her paws and she traversed the shore. She had travelled far as she combed the beach, and had a substantial amount of herbs to show for it. She had cached most along the way, marking the spots carefully, and now carried only some withered marigold and feverfew.
The coyote had her pause, and she watched it a moment. Approaching benignly, feathery tail drifting openly behind her, she stopped when she came close enough to notice that the male was not quite the coyote she had thought him to be. Dropping her herbs, she regarded him curiously, speaking lyrically a moment later. "it is a coconut," His confusion was evident enough, and she continued a moment later. "it holds sweet-water, but is near-impossible to open."

Weetzie regarded the woman with caution as she approached. His urge to flee was fading with each friendly stranger he met, but he still couldn’t help being a bit skittish. He immediately noticed that she was carrying some plants, and he assumed she was an herbalist. He watched in silence as she set her herbs down and proceeded to explain the large pod from the giant fern, but her explanation left him even more confused.
To think that a tree would produce such a pod just to hold water, but the stranger had said sweet-water. He could imagine his sister getting hyped up on sugar-water and going even crazier than usual. She also said it was near-impossible- not completely impossible- to open. That made him want to try, even if there was no logic in expending such effort for water when there were plenty of streams to drink from.
Weetzie believed he had improved his social skills, but his voice was still flat and emotionless when he spoke, but his curiosity showed in the tilt of his head. “So, are these coconut trees native to this region? I have never encountered them before, and have you ever succeeded in opening one? When you say, near-impossible, that implies that it is still possible, though I wonder if it makes sense to expend such effort merely to obtain water.”
