Marbas did not like his odds against the two women - fighting or running. "How would I go about joining your ranks?"  he asked, not wanting to give away his uncertainty, but looking for a way to buy himself more time to think. It looked like running might be the best way out, after all. He didn't really want to gain a reputation as a coward, but that didn't matter as much to him as getting away without tangling himself up in something that would be harder to get out of, later. And what was he supposed to say? On second thought, I think I'll take my leave, now.

Not hardly. No, Marbas simply quirked and ear, and then turned as if he'd hear something - and then he was off like a bolt of lightning, propelling himself on strong legs used to running through sand more than this simply, hard-packed earth. He wasn't confident he could get away without a scratch, but certainly without a fight. After all, he'd avoided the bulk of the famine, and these would had clearly not. Still, only time would tell if he could outstripe the two females.
