he had not spoken since the encounter with the foolish stranger, bring his grand total of times having spoken up to two. today, he lurked near the den, twisting around to clean the fur of his spine with rough, hurried strokes of his teeth. then,  quite suddenly, he stopped. he pulled his head around carefully, eyes narrowed as he moved his maw, slowly,  intently.

then, he spat. and it was with a surprised expression that he stared down at the thing on the ground. a tooth. his tooth. his tongue ran over the new vacancy in his maw slowly as he stared at it, and for the first time, the boy felt mildly concerned.
