Had Glaukos understood the changes he was undergoing in these moments, the sudden maturation, and the volatility that would result, he might have withdrawn.

It was certainly something the auxiliary had been told about: to stay away from women, that is. A new rule which came to the ranks of Mereo once the man Germanicus had taken a wife. Glaukos had hardly cared; he never looked upon anyone with lust, until now.

He did not know that it was lust that painted his face — and when a man approached out of thin air, ginger-coated like the woman but younger by far, and a stranger, Glaukos shot them a glare and began to bristle. A look that said: Mind your own business.

Glaukos stalked a few more steps but his attention was divided between the hunkering woman in the snow, who now looked smaller than before and a much easier target, and the spindly young man, who was by Mereo's standards, a rogue to be chased off.
