Kaertok's belly rumbled when he smelled the kill upon the air. He shrunk back when he smelled the bear, but it was nowhere to be seen. Not only that, but another wolf was feasting upon the kill. So either the bear was gone, or the threat of it was not enough to outweigh the delightful meal that was ripe for the taking. The boy knew he was risking it by moving in toward the kill, but he needed that food. A voice called out, and Sungiwok hoped that the wolf would be distracted long enough that he could grab a bite from the opposite side of the black wolf before vanishing. He had no intention of getting into a quarrel. He was too weak, too young, to risk that much.

Darting forward, Malrok attempted to rip off a chunk of the dead thing's flesh for his own famished belly.
