he splashed into the shallows, soaking her legs, and vuk felt a rare bit of genuine laughter bubble into her throat. she lowered her muzzle to throw water droplets over seff's head, then paused to look at him, this tiny boy so beloved by the pack and by herself. 

wading out of the stream, vuk shook her pelt and lay down in the dappled shade cast by a birch tree. milk remained in her body, though seff, having moved to chewed meat, rarely nursed, but she lay invitingly if her son so chose to partake out of comfort. 

slowly the girl's eyelids drooped and soon she dozed in the warmth, seff tucked into the curl of her embrace.
