he was an odd, abrupt man, vuk decided, and the clip of his brief sentences made her wonder if she should add words of her own. her eyes found the earth and then traveled back to the wolf seated on his haunches, to which she made a gesture of her own, settling before him. yet their silence was not quite affable, which unnerved the she-wolf. clearing her throat, vuk gazed briefly at the mountaintops rearing into the cold air and smiled gently. "hunt w-with me?" the tyro asked softly.
the fear of rejection did not frighten the patchwork wolfess so much as the idea the man would say yes, for she knew him not and was unsure if she wished to be alone with his short sentences and swaggering gait. but vuk knew this dread came from some wellspring not evoked by the man before her, and so she swallowed it down and waited for his response.[/tr][/td][/table]
