back to where he had met the dapple-eyed man, back to where he had become king of the nighttime world. byll was buffalo's eternal moan during the long wintry days that moved without end, rolling snow across what should by now be green land. or perhaps the madman did not know, and had never known.
but here he was again, with paws akimbo and fresh blood dripping in slow warm streams from his shoulders, the ruff behind his ears, his jaws. and now the two-toned eyes burned toward the inkblot from the clasp of the nearby trees.
