Following Peregine's demise, Whip stayed as close as he could to the family he had left. Mostly, Whip shadowed his brother Gannet whenever he could. Whip was finding it difficult to sort out the tumultuous emotions of the past few days, especially after losing the one outlet he had -- his father. Though he still had his mother around, she just wasn't the same. She didn't understand him like Peregrine did, nor did Whip feel she ever would.

Like his brother, Whip's grief had turned into embittered frustration. He wanted to lash out at something, anything. He would do whatever he needed to spread the pain that had descended over his family.

When Whip heard the struggle nearby, his attention was roused. Being nearby, he was upon his brother and a stranger shortly. The smell of blood lingered in the air, yet Whip didn't know if it belonged to his brother or the stranger. Whip did not wait long enough to find out before he entered the fray. He launched himself at the attacking wolf's neck -- and though he and his brother were both young and inexperienced when it came to fighting, he hoped that while they could not overpower the stranger, that they could somehow outmaneuver him together.
