The first impression of Easthollow was quite good. Compared to the Ice Fields and Redhawk caldera this was by far the best place Birk had lived so far. Probably, there was a difference, when you joined or stayed with a pack not because you particularly liked the people around you, but because of a desperate need. Marriage of convenience was good, stable and often a very practical one, but for the northerner it had never been a very happy one. Therefore he hoped that by making a choice based on the fact that he had a good feeling about the place, he had not made a mistake. Time would tell.

He was tracing the borders today, following one landmark to the other to know for sure, where their - his - lands ended and where the strangers were free to wander. Now and then he stopped to sniff at the scents the others before him had left, and if he deemed it neccessary, he added one of his own. Then he marched on.

Ever since the day his mother had taught him how to properly mark the borders, Ezra had been practicing on just about anything he could find. A rock, a tree, a stick, you name it and the boy probably went and peed on it. He was anxious to practice on the borders, so when he noticed the familiar pale figure of Birk in the distance, Ezra quickly marched towards the nu’s direction. At first he thought about directly approaching the new recruit but decided against it and fell into his usual state of observing from a distance.

He trailed behind the older male at a comfortable length, watching with slight jealousy as Birk marked the borders and continued on his way. The grayscale boy wondered when he’d get to approach the borders again without adult supervision. He understood the reasoning behind being cautious and would never break his mother’s rule, but he had to admit it was rather troublesome to go and search for a grownup every time he wanted to practice his trade. Yes he’s young but he’s a growing boy and a big one too. He just wants to be as reliable as the next guy.

Never letting himself to drown in his own thoughts too much and always being keenly aware of, what was going on around him, Birk noticed his little "tail" the moment it began to follow his tracks. He let him do so for quite a while, stopping occasionally to sniff and catch a glimpse of the little guy from the corner of his eye, but not making a contact yet. He decided to let him have some fun a little longer.

At one point, however, he turned around to face Valette's son and without saying a word, sat down and scrutinized the young one to see, what would he do now that he was spotted.

He had continued to silently trudge after the pale man, eyes brightening a bit when he came to a sudden and unexpected stop. Ezra, not really sure what to do, remained firmly in place as the male turned and sat, ears swiveling forward as Birk watched for his reaction. Unfortunately for the lambda, not much exciting happened.

The grayscale child looked over each shoulder to make sure he was in fact the one being stared at and once confirmed that it was indeed him, Ezra blinked a few times, smiled, let his tail swish behind him once or twice and then looked at the pale male like he was asking when he was going to start patrolling again. He was here to watch and learn, not sit around and kill time!

"If you want to stalk someone and remain unnoticed - you have to be better than this," Birk pointed out, when the boy said nothing to him, but seemed to be very keen for some action. The northerner was not going to oblige, therefore in order to see, how the youngster will react, he lied down. Time was on his side and he had nowhere to hurry.

"Ezra, right?" the man guessed, not knowing many wolves here by name yet, but doing his best to remember those, who he did. "Learning the trade or following people around is your thing?"

A frown fell on the boy’s face when Birk plopped to the ground, nose scrunching up in disapproval. He took a few steps towards the pale man, tail sticking stiffly outwards while he continued his advance. Ezra steadily closed the distance between the two and only offered a flick of his ears in acknowledgment of his name.

Once close enough to make physical contact, the boy immediately reached out and attempted to grasp one Birk’s ears gently between his jaws. Should his attempt be successful, he’d give the ear a small tug in hopes of coaxing the male from his relaxed position.

It seemed that the boy was not much of a talker, which was good, in Birk's opinion. He was quite a chatter-box, when he wanted to be, but lately he enjoyed more, when others either talked directly about the matters or did not speak at all.

He observed the kid's advance with an amused expression, giving some friendly wags of the tail, to indicate that he was not entirely unfriendly. Much to the older man's surprise, Ezra grabbed his ear and tugged it a little, as if to make him get up and move. Birk, who usually was not much of a softie, thought that this was kind of cute and, why shouldn't he mess with the lad for a while?

Therefore he gave a rumbling growl and lied on his side. Eyes looking up at the boy - to see, what he was about to do next.

His plan to get Birk up and moving again had failed miserably and Ezra let out a grumble in response to the older male’s growl. He didn’t embrace games as easily as his sisters, but a playful smile did find it’s way to the boy’s lips when Birk peered up at him from the ground. So it was a challenge then, huh? Well bring it on!

A lightbulb went off inside the grayscale child’s head and his smile slowly morphed into a mischievous grin. He positioned himself to stand beside the older male and after a few seconds, lifted his leg to make it appear as if he was about to stain that nice pale fur an ugly yellow. Ezra would of course never do something so distasteful to a fellow packmate, but he hoped the idea itself was threatening enough to make Birk abandon his position on the ground.

"Cheeky, little rascal," Birk growled at the boy, when he saw, what he was about to do. A quick turn and snap towards the lifted foot, his teeth clicking together mere inches from the offending limb. In part the boy's plan had worked - because now the older wolf was lying on his belly, instead of the previous lateral position.

Still he refused to budge - gave a mighty yawn and after casting a brief glance towards the boy, as if asking - now, what you are going to do? - he turned his gaze away and pretended to be interested in something in the distance.
