Why are you keeping this curiosity door closed? - Venamis - July 13, 2019

The wood was painfully quiet, and in the weeks since the pack's relocation his family seemed displaced. While his mother was rarely far, his father was distant. Too young to understand the stress and responsibility that accompanied a position of leadership, Venamis felt troubled and confused by these long periods of absence.

His siblings bored him, likely having grown callous to their rogue brother's trickery. They were growing up quickly; Revan had always been mostly immune to Venamis' mischief, but Lumi and Zan had always been easy targets. Nowadays, they were better at anticipating the dark youngster's plotting.

And so he ventured farther from the family's densite and even the boundaries set by his parents, in search of a new victim. He weaved between the forest's proud trees and felt the prickle of uncertainty along his nape as they grew sparse, yet pressed on curiously. Having grown up surrounded by dense woodland, open territory roused an uncomfortable sense of vulnerability in him.

His eerily pale gaze scanned the vast plains before him, and his tall black ears swivelled atop his narrow skull as he hunted for something worth his time.

RE: Why are you keeping this curiosity door closed? - Maegi - July 18, 2019

She hadn't left the woods in quite some time, occupied as she was with her children. But the exodus of first Mou and then Ramsay was a living nightmare, haunting her dreams and disturbing every waking moment. She had to look for them. . .didn't she? At least, she had to give it somewhat of a try, even if she couldn't go very far.

Maegi's pale form spilled out onto the prairie, small and slight. Her nostrils flared as she took in the vast array of scents, trying to pick out something, anything, familiar within them. It was not a smell that drew her attention but the shadow close on the horizon. Her ears pricked and her heart skipped a beat; could it be—?

But no, as she came closer, the burly form had no hunched back, and the wolf was much younger than her brother. She heaved a sigh, approaching anyway, wondering why one so young was out wandering alone. Even she hadn't. . .right?

Are you lost? Maegi asked, cocking her head. There was something familiar in the raven-black fur, the pale eyes. The scent, too. . . It would hit her eventually, likely, but for now, she waited for the boy's response.

There was movement ahead, followed by the appearance of a pale form. The spiderling watched quietly, swept his raven ears back and ducked his frame low as he prowled forward, closer - not knowing that he had already been spotted.

It was not fear that encouraged him to hide, for Venamis was instead spurred by the predatory desire to spark such in others. As young and vulnerable as he was, he held a record of success in besting his siblings; clearly the smartest Melonii child, Ven felt it appropriate to think himself invincible.

He was not invisible, however, as Maegi madevto approach him. Disappointed frustration bloomed in the form of a frown on his features as the adult addressed him, and the boy straightened himself as he lifted his proud muzzle to better look upon her face. Failing to answer her question, the spiderling's pale eyes were at once fixed to the exposed fangs at the turn side of her muzzle, which he tried to mimic. Lips peeled back to reveal his own teeth, though he made a poor impression.

"What happened to your face?" Ven asked, perhaps a little too boldly or in a way that may be considered rude, and disregarded the wolfess' own request for information.

Her query went unanswered; instead, she herself was questioned, which displeased her. Still, it was well within the bluntly curious nature of a child to ask such a thing, and so Maegi took a short, steadying inhale, staring down at the boy. A very bad wolf tore my face open, when I was around your age, she explained.

And as she said it, she caught a note in his scent that was quite familiar to her. Her gaze became intrigued, wary—though not angry, per se.

Where are your parents? Maegi asked, brows drawing together. Why are you out here all on your own?

Had something happened? Nyx had never seemed the type to let children of hers run amok—the Apaata had always been a fairly maternal creature, in Maegi's view. Or maybe this was some sick decoy; perhaps the boy had been sent to distract them from a coming ambush. She waited for the pup's response, anxiety mounting within her.

A very bad wolf.

Venamis' ears pricked, made all the more curious by this pallid stranger's description of the creature who'd made his mark on her face. His frosty gaze studied the scarring curiously and he carefully stepped closer, eager to better inspect the torn lips that left her fangs exposed.

At such proximity, he sensed something was off - an anxiety similar to that his mother might display when one of her offspring wandered out of view. Venamis' eyes shifted to look upon the adult's furrowed brow, and felt his chest swell a little with satisfaction that came with the assumption that he might be the cause of her discomfort.

She questioned the whereabouts of his parents, and wondered out loud as to why he was alone. The ebony youngster twitched his nose, remaining silent for a time that he hoped would further unsettle the yearling further, before lowering to his haunches so he could nibble at an itch on a shoulder. "They're boring," he complained simply as he looked upon her rugged features once again in attempt to communicate wordlessly: entertain me?

It was to be expected, and yet the boy's bold opinion made her chuckle. There was something about children and their penchant to not hold a single word back that charmed and amused her. This pup in particular had a mind and a mouth on him. Took after his father that way—though, Maegi hoped, he would divert from Damien's path in all other ways.

Sorry to hear that, she responded, her mouth wry. But they're probably worried about you, you know. They might even be out looking for you. I'd head back before you get into trouble.

It was a concept foreign to her, personally, but she knew it from observing other litters. Her own parents had been absent at best (Cicero had done his damndest, despite his sneaky ways, but then had died) and so she had enjoyed a childhood full of freedom. She couldn't imagine that Damien and Nyx were similarly lax.

Can I walk you back home? Maegi offered, a little stiffly. She didn't relish the thought of heading to Melonii territory. . .but she also didn't want to see something awful befall the boy out here, all on his own.

Worried about him? Out looking for him? In trouble?

Venamis wrinkled his nose, and bore his teeth briefly in distaste. Did this dumb adult seriously think he cared about his parents' reaction to his stepping out of line? Pallid eyes peered up past his furrowed brows, judgemental and unimpressed by her decision to baby him by escorting him home, and he huffed a sharp breath.

The answer to her offer, albeit silent, was an obvious no.

That message went completely received. At his huff, Maegi gave a shrug, looking away from the boy. Suit yourself, she responded blandly. Boy, he was a stubborn one, wasn't he?

Enjoy your travels, then, Maegi added, knowing full well that there was nothing else she could say to change his mind. It had been an intriguing meeting, for sure, but maybe it was best that she left the affairs of the Melonii among themselves. Meddling, well. . . No good could come of it.

The young woman turned, beginning to head back to the woods. She was weary already of the search; resuming it at a later date seemed incredibly appealing.

She regarded his answer coolly, clearly uninterested in his stubborn response. At once, the boy was enraptured; he'd have faced a bat on the ear by his mother's paw should he dare speak to her in such a bold manner. If this one let him bark his defiance at her, what else might she allow without punishment?

Venamis watched her turn away from him, frosted gaze lingering on the awkward curve of a mangled forepaw that gave her a hobbled gait that he hadn't paid attention to before. He stared at her, both curious and ready to push boundaries, and the decision to follow and test her patience was something that came naturally.

He didn't need his dull family, anyway. Far more interesting things awaited in whatever part of the world Maegi had come from.
