"We'll figure it out," Floki said and Wildfire's lips pinched together. She nodded, feeling tearful all over again. She could hear the uncertainty in his familiar deep timbre but she didn't blame him for it. That he was willing to work on this with her, despite the horribleness of the situation, meant everything to the little red Gamma.

She followed him wordlessly as the silver Beta led the way up the mountain, hanging back significantly more than usual but still near enough that Wildfire could sense Floki's familiar warmth. Her whole body—hell, her entire existence— seemed to sigh in a mixture of exhaustion and relief. Once she got horizontal, Wildfire was pretty sure she would stay that way for a few days.

When the pair of them arrived at their destination, Wildfire bit her lip and looked at Floki. "Sorry," she whispered one last time before seeking a private spot, curling into a ball and sinking into unconsciousness for the second time that day.
