Even though Towhee wasn't Figment and Fennec's biological mother (or the biological mother of the three little ones), Phox had always thought of her as their mother. He also thought of Niamh as the mother of his three little ones, both biologically and in every other way. They were equals, as far as he was concerned.

That was the part that didn't make sense to him. Why would Towhee reject somebody who wanted to help parent her kid? Especially when it was fairly likely that he had been half of the equation to the solution that was Meerkat.
