Lotte passed through the forest at the sound of two voices that were infinitely dear to her: those of her adventurous little son and Hemlock, who wasn’t nearly as easy to classify. She was careful to approach silently, her paws ghosting over the now familiar terrain with ease, for she did not wish to break the little snowbear’s concentration. The moments she had with her cubs were precious, made all the more precious by the passage of time. They were eating meat now and had no need to suckle; they were mobile now and growing more fearless by the day. She would lose them soon, as all parents lost a little of their children day by day, and she felt at once rejoice and sorrow at the thought. When she drew near enough to make eye contact with Hemlock over the snowy fluff of her furiously growling son, her matte, colorpoint fur rendering her practically invisible under cover of shadow, she winked playfully.
