All Welcome
Constantine was finding himself enjoying his new freedom. He had always questioned the appeal when Casmir sought the Outrider trade, as he had preferred border duty first. But now, with the autumn sun gleaming off his dark coat and a world to explore before him, the youth knew he was sold.

Perhaps, once his brother was back from scouting, he could coax his age mate to go with him as well and show him what he knew. It had been awhile since the two had spent such time with one another.

Nosing a leaf that brushed past his limb, the boy found himself by a gorge. The landscape was appealing to him – different than what he was sued to, and without as much caution as perhaps would be wise, the black-masked wolf loped forward, dipping further in to the gorge as he regarded the waters below the canyon edges, wondering if there was a way down.

He had been bidden to scout ahead, and though he did so, he was a miserable slave to his whims. His sharp yellow eyes spotted the yearling along the edge of the gorge and he stared as a corpse might: unblinking and unmoving. Spittle collected about his black lips and formed a long string of saliva that dangled from one side of his jaw. He paid no heed to the wind, nor to how his bony form stood out against a brushless background.

The wind brushed at his nose – offering a shift of change upon it. Blinking, the youth felt the hairs along his back lift in apprehension, and jerking his muzzle back, he noticed his new audience. The stare was surreal – the creature itself was wolf, but seemed like something from a horror show.

Even aside from the grimy look of the stranger – the sallow, haunted eyes as they seemed to stare hungrily at him, Constantine realized how dangerous a situation he could have placed himself in now.  The edges of the gorge were deep, and the bony creature had him almost blocked in.

He debated what to do – calling out in an amicable fashion seemed the wisest choice – perhaps, the wolf would be less hungry if Constantine befriended him. But logic stirred instinct, and without hesitating any longer the youth darted backward, away from the edges and hopefully away from the haunting stranger.

It did not take long before the boy noticed him, and it took even less time for the young wolf to decide he wanted nothing to do with the hungry creature that stared at him. Rat watched as he backed away from the cliff and darted away, making no move to follow other than to turn his head and let his hawklike eyes follow the disappearing form. He flopped to his rump, reached forward with a hindpaw to scratch at his shoulder, dislodging a flea or two, before he rose and carried on his own way.
