Seeing her sister’s face, Furi knows she doesn’t want to hear the news she has to say. A lot of bad things happened. Pain pricks at the back of her eyes and she blinks a few times, trying to fight the swell in her chest that makes it hard to breathe. “No?” she decides. It’s not true. It can’t be true. “What? No,” she says again, clearing her throat and putting a step between them. She moves once to the right, as if she’s going to leave but decides against it. She does the same to the left.
 
Silence lingers as she tries to sort it all very quickly, frantically looking between her sister and the rest of the world for an out. After a moment, her eyes widened with the perfect plan. Eirlys doesn’t know what she’s talking about. “Where’s papa? Ceallach?” she asks. They’ll know. They’ll tell her she’s fine. Where’s mama? she wants to urge, her last breath strangling in her throat.
