The instant she felt the spider crunch between her nose and the wall, Wildfire felt a tingle throughout her whole body. Disregarding the fact that it had bitten her, she did a bit of a pants-on-fire dance there beside the wall, shaking her head wildly to send the crumpled little corpse flying. It sailed across the den and landed noiselessly at the Heda's feet, perhaps an inch from where a crying Artaax sprawled. Wildfire stared at it in disgust and horror, then blinked at the wailing whelp, before her eyes darted upward to meet her mate's.

"Spider," she blurted stupidly, unaware of the blood dribbling from her crushed nose. "Is—oh shit." She wasn't usually one to swear but Wildfire belatedly registered what she had done: she had thrown Artaax across the den! "Is he—did I hurt him—the spider was going right for him—oh skafa—" Wildfire spluttered even as she slung herself to the ground and inched closer, accidentally smearing blood all over his head as she nuzzled him.

The circumstances were strange, to be sure, but it was in that moment that the Bandrona felt the first real thread of love since the pups' birth. It blew away like a wisp in the next moment, much to her quiet dismay, but she was left with such a feeling of protectiveness that she entirely forgot to mention that a black widow had bitten her face.
