The Beta bobbed her head, understanding completely. If she was in Roz's proverbial shoes, she would take off the instant she was physically able to do so. Towhee took Smokestep to be a name, which clicked with the context. But the invalid's next few words gave her pause, causing the yearling's features to scrunch.

"First mate? How many mates does he have?" she wanted to know, making no effort to disguise her incredulity.
