Charon stopped drinking when Vela voiced her question. He didn't really want to talk about Galaxy — didn't want to admit, somehow, that she was gone — but he knew he couldn't really avoid these questions. Charon might've been curt or brutal if it were anyone else asking, if it were Jarilo asking, but he couldn't risk hurting Vela more than she already had been by Galaxy's disappearance.

"Yes, like Galaxy," he said eventually, after a long break in which he thought on the answer, and glanced at his daughter. "They're probably not together right now, but I'm sure they'll both be back some day." It wasn't that he wanted to lie, but it seemed like the only option right now to keep his young daughter's mind from crumbling. A little white lie.
