set during the pup's trip to BFW. tags for reference

With not a little amount of reluctance, Maegi followed her brothers out of Noctisardor Bypass and back the way they came, looking for their missing father.

There were a few reasons why she chose to depart, though her instincts were screaming stay. Chief among those reasons was that she didn't want to send her brothers out alone. She felt responsible for them. She knew that @Euron and @Ramsay were intelligent boys, perfectly capable of fending for themselves--being abandoned by their mother at such a young age had lent the pups incredible survival skills--and would do just fine, following the trail back to Blackfeather. But she worried, and she would have worried more had she stayed behind. Better to worry by their side.

And she was concerned about @Cicero, too. Her shock at the revelation that he was their father had slowly melted into a dull acceptance, a fact meant to simply absorb and live with. She liked the patchwork man, truly. His demeanor was pleasing to her, and she enjoyed learning new things from him. That he had sinned, according to Potema, was of no concern to the girl; his kindness to his children superseded any wrongdoings he had committed prior to her birth, in her eyes.

Guilt for leaving without a word gnawed at Maegi's stomach. She thought of @Vaati's reaction, of @Kove's, and found herself swallowing these lumps that rose constantly in her throat as she imagined the potential storm they left behind. Out of all the pups, Maegi was perhaps most willing to follow directions and rules, and it was with the knowledge that she was breaking the rules that she left the Bypass.

Now they were close, and while worry and guilt and reluctance all together plagued her, Maegi felt comforted at the sight of the dark woods in the distance. She was coming home. She was not fond of the Bypass, nor any of the wilderness they had seen on their trip to and from the Blackfeather domain, and was both excited and relieved to return to the shadows. She hoped that the enemy forces had completely left the Woods, that they would find Cicero, and that they would stay. They would have to deal with Vaati's probable anger when the rest of the wolves returned.

Maegi would pay a visit to the Altar. Say a prayer for the soul of her great-uncle, slain in battle. Maybe Cicero, if he was still present and breathing, could show her more caches. Life would be as it was before the war.

For now, she trudged on, weary eyes locked on the hunched dark form of one brother and the lithe form of the other. She didn't show it lately--her dull mood over the past days clouded any optimism she might still have carried--but she was proud of Ramsay and Euron. The former was training to be a warrior, the latter a spy. They had beaten the odds simply by living; to see them thriving was a marvel. They would prove invaluable to Blackfeather Woods, with time. One day, she thought, the trio might rule the entire roost. She certainly had plans of that nature.

Perhaps she would tell them all this when they arrived at the Woods. For now, though, they must find Cicero.
