Normally Coelacanth wasn’t the type to protest when an older wolf — especially a male — especially especially one as deeply respected as Grayday! — made a suggestion like that. It was the profound shame engendered by her perceived failures with Komodo and Aditya that urged her to demur: “N-No,” she whispered softly, shaking her head as fear briefly illuminated her Neptune gaze like lightning over the sea. A rictus of nervousness caused her delicate features to tauten as she gathered her courage, and it intensified as she watched her cousin come to terms with her mate’s imminent departure. “No, Grrrayday,” she begged him gently. “Stay, guppies, Catori.”

Coelacanth welcomed her cousin’s embrace, tears springing to her cerulean eyes and wetting her velveteen cheeks. “Oh,” she wavered timorously. Her heart was so full of love and longing that she found it difficult to breathe; she was a creature made to love and be loved with her whole heart, and finding that two of her closest friendships were rift-riddled because of her love language had shaken her self confidence greatly. She had to believe things would be okay — but she was also a creature with a staggering propensity for guilt, and she could find little fault in Komodo and Aditya.

The blame, she knew — and no wolf would ever be able to convince her otherwise, not even her beloved Stockholm — was hers. She was a Bad Dog, and she did not deserve good things.

A hiccupping sob wrenched from her lips, but she trapped her quivering breath between tightly clenched teeth, and stayed that way until the uneven fluttering of her rib cage quieted.

“I love you, Catori; I love you, Grayday,” she whispered when she could. “Raven watch, peace be. Will b-be safe.” She took a small step backward, believing she would not be waylaid…

…but she was waylaid, and in the sweetest of ways. Lavender arrived just in time to hear her father insist that he would escort Seelie back to Undersea himself. The mottled girl, having never seen Wheeling Gull Isle — except from the opposite shore! — begged to be included on what seemed to her like a grand adventure. With reassurances to Catori, the trio set out at a pace steady enough for Grayday’s failing sight, following a course pretty enough for Lavender’s wide eyes.
