Cypress needed no further invitation. He clambered atop his brother a bit unsteadily, but used the tree trunk to prop himself up — and then he leapt, snapping at the butterflies. They vacated their spot on the trunk, and one of them flew away, completely out of sight — but the other one, the yellow one, flew down toward the forest floor where Rannoch waited. “Nah!” squeaked out Cypress, falling harmlessly to the earth — puppies were composed of fifty percent rubber, weren’t they? — and bouncing slightly as he regained his footing. “Go! Go!” He barked, excitedly allowing his brother to strike the final blow in chasing that pesky interloper away.

He braced himself as his brother did the dirty work, glancing up when he could to see the progress that he was making. He had only winced when Cypress had climbed, but when his brother had settled upon his shoulders the child found it oddly comforting. But, despite the comfort, he was relieved when his brother hopped off. His paws danced as he looked to Cypress with proud, his tail waving. “Cy I---” he was cut off by the other’s urging.

Turning around quickly, Rannoch met eyes with the enemy. Without another thought he lunged in the butterfly’s direction, his jaws snapping as he chased off the fiend. His efforts proved successful as the yellow butterfly raced after the other and quickly out of eyesight. Huffing as he watched the butterfly float away, Rannoch turned to Cypress with a proud gleam in his eyes.

He pranced over with a wagging tail and it was with that that the two children scampered off to the safety of their den, ready for a nap after such an adventure.
