The night escalated quickly; a blood-curdling roar sounded from a distance that was too close for comfort. The call jump-started the tempo of the Alpha's heart, and with the adrenaline rush aiding his actions, he scrambled to pinpoint where the cry had come from. From what Rannoch had previously observed, as he had entered the mutual lands, he had concluded that he had been alone in the Glen and had anticipated another tame night of scouting. But, apparently, this night was one that the Alpha would not soon forget.

A shadow barreled closer to where Rannoch stood, bringing a threat that would bring even the bravest to their knees. It was as though death itself was propelling itself closer and all Rannoch could do was watch in horror. Even if he did want to run, it would have been too late for him to escape unscathed; even with his bulk, Vaati was swift. Had the Spiderling been slower, the Alpha might have realized just who the wolf was and perhaps knowing would have added more impact to Vaati's hit.

With his body tense, Rannoch braced for impact. Despite his training in Guardianship, he was not a fighter by nature. But even he knew that the strongest of words would not distract his foe; Vaati would need to be met with tooth and claw.

In an unexpected turn of events, the Spiderling went straight for the Alpha's throat. Easily toppled by the weight of the hit, Rannoch snarled as he went down and attempted to lunge his head forward to counter the attack. It was as this happened that hot blades of steel ripped at the tender flesh of Rannoch's throat and his attack ceased as Rannoch looked to the other's face with wide eyes as he found himself unable to negate the other's strike as Rannoch was already teetering along the fine line of life and death.

Blood pooled, staining his pearly throat as Vaati kept his hold. The Alpha was growing weaker by the moment, and the light was slowly escaping from his turquoise eyes.
a crime so old as the sky and bone
he came untied, solid as a stone
all is almost lost and it starts to show
