Amidst towering stone walls water pooled beneath the sweltering midday sun. Long shadows stretched across the beaten earth, where loose pebbles mingled with sand. It was eerily quiet at the base of the butte. Each crack and crevice sheltered an occupant. All eager for the encroaching nightfall. The water lapped steadily at the banks.
Ebb and flow. Ripple and trickle.
Drip.
Drip.
Drip.
SPLASH!
Stones cascaded from above. From the base of the monolith, should one not have been bludgeoned by a falling rock, a head could be seen peering over the ledge.
Crowning the top of the butte a new sentinel assumed position. Reclined upon strong limbs, keen eyes narrowed as they swept over the vast landscape below. A rabbit skin pouch nestled between outstretched paws.
How the sun burned. Ransem grimaced as heat kissed the top of his skull. The stone he rest upon too radiated heat. To distract himself, he took to documenting his surroundings.
To the south: The water trickled away into the desert.
To the east: More desert, dotted by distant pools of blue.
To the west: A meager strip of blue accompanied by barely visible blurs of green.
To the north: A notable swath of green. A mountain range even further beyond.
This was the Teekons? Ransem nearly laughed at the notion. A pitiful land this would be if this barren wasteland was all the Teekons had to offer.
Dry tongue swept across parched lips. Ransem rose to his paws with a vigorous shake of his uncomfortably thick coat. The contents of the pouch clicked as he collected it and navigated his descent with deft footwork. Feet upon level ground, he glanced back up the massive monolith, unimpressed, before turning towards the water.
He would have to make due with this barren wasteland, for now.
