To run with the caribou. Other Shore had waited for so little but so much time to run again. And yet, it was ironic that today would not be the day.
Star Eater had told her about the march, the long, harsh journey, and she had accepted it herself. But the thought of new scenery, the passion that drove her to unknown lands, ignited a strange thrill within her.
She would eventually run again, faster than ever, but her muscles were still heavier than she remembered them to be before she had found herself in Saatsine lands. But many a time she had gazed at the herd, had watched the Lanzadoii bring death upon the caribou, had dreamed of running with them. She would make herself useful, and be proud of it. She would make them proud of her for it.
But, at the moment, if she were to make it to Herbalist's Cache without sore muscles, she would be immensely grateful.
Sun Eater gave his declaration, recited the laws of the Lanzadoii, but the words came into one of Other Shore's ears and out the other. Her eyes remained fixated on that - that... slave, in Sun Eater's words. And tried, she did, to believe the chieftan, to believe that slave to be mere doll of flesh and bones, no longer deserving of sympathy. But she found it to be impossible as she realized that this girl was the same age as her, if not a moon or two younger. Sun Eater tossed her youth aside and kept her under that firm, cruel grip of his.
Could he do the same to anyone? To Other Shore herself?
Sun Eater finished his words, and at last Other Shore could embrace the relief that avoided her for so long. She averted her gaze from the girl as the march began. Exhasution settled in quick, but it failed to whittle away the thrill. Some people stayed; some disappeared into the wind; some left after having apparently spotted a lingering herd in the valley. Time passed; winds raced; grounds shifted. Qeya River soon slipped behind them, tucking away into distant lands, but even then they kept walking.
The march continued.
