devastation never had its name until chakliux returned home. loss and loss and loss, reverberating; he could not keep himself steady and broke into tears that flowed till dry.
chakliux was beyond disconsolate; he was shattered, and in the manner of a man dragging his spear through the sand, he wandered unseeing beside the shoreland. the skies had opened to pour grey rain upon moontide, but even the keening wind of a sleet-laden storm did not hide the growl of the sea.
jaw slack, his voice remembered only the old songs of the peninsula; he counted the names of his children, his wives; he repeated them to the rolling of the cold sea.
and now he stood, starkly staring.
tullik's dancing eyes.
marina's laughter.
kilalurak! puffin! sea hunter; sirmiq; chagak; taggak; raiyuk. raiyuk.
how could he leave them behind?
how could he leave dutch? rodyn? simbelmyne? aditya? he was selfish. he must go back.
but the hunter could not move, transfixed by the comforting roil of brine.
oil father whispering; your seal spirits protect them.
tearstained voice a sob, chakliux lifted his face to the icy air and took a single step.
