wellshite. I did a roll to see what Niamh finds along the borders and bear won. I'll be doing rolls each round to see if the bear attacks or retreats or wha, and how successful Niamh's moves are. Anyone who joins, it'd be awesome if we all did this using the dice roller thinger.
Something was off.
It wasn't a smell Niamh was used to, but it still made the fur along the nape of her neck raise and bristle. As soon as she saw the footprints in the soft, muddy ground, she knew what it was. Traipsing its way past the borders in the gentle spattering of rain, the bear had moved in on their territory, likely hoping to catch fish in their lake, or in the rivers that rain off the plateau. Regardless of its intentions, Niamh did not want it within their borders, so she called out- alerting the others that there was a bear inside their borders, heading toward the lake from the thicket.
She tracked the bear and found it not long before it passed from the thicket and out into the open. It was a black bear- not terribly large, and perhaps just a few years old- but still it had more weight to throw around than she did, that was for sure. The hefty creature stopped when it caught her scent and swung its heavy head toward her. She sauntered around it, giving it a wide berth, before she blocked its path, and stood, head down, and uttering a low growl. Naturally, she couldn't hold off a bear on her own- but at least for the moment, until her other packmates showed up, the bear seemed to reconsider its path, and sit down, regarding her with a wary look. There was a spark of intelligence in its dark eyes- it knew, likely, that it was within a pack's territory- hence why it had paused. But did it care? That was the decision it had to make.

He'd given himself a segment of the territory to get to know, and to patrol, so he was busy doing that for a while. But then he noticed a weird haze in the air; there was a strange smell unlike anything he'd ever breathed before, and it brought up some red flags. Ambrose decided to seek out Niamh — knowing she was probably doing a patrol too — and that took him the better part of an hour.
It would've been faster if he'd known the territory a little better. Niamh was quick too, but then he heard her calling out for aid — his thoughts to the air quality and the odd burning smell had vanished from his mind when he heard her voice, and he picked up his pace.
When he found her, she was facing off against a tubby looking shadow. It was natural for him to come up alongside her to aid in the fight; he'd seen some bears in his old pack but they were smaller, even compared to this guy. Seemed like everything about the plateau was bigger, bolder, and better.
He glanced quickly to Niamh to gauge her reaction, and rumbled a low note to let her know he was there in case she didn't realize it yet, ready to dive in and help divert this creature.

I'm doing rolls for the bear's movements; if a fight breaks out, then we can roll for fight stuff, sure :) others still welcome to join. Until a fight breaks out, though, it'll mostly just be rolling for the bear's movements.
Sure enough, a dark figure approached and joined Niamh, and she was pleased to see that her brother had answered the call. She gave him a slight smile- likely because in theit youth, they had been arrogant and foolhardy, and now, as they stood shoulder to shoulder, she felt that same sort of foolish confidence return. Together, they could take on a black bear, couldn't they? It was one of the smaller kinds of bear, as far as Niamh knew- so therefore, it wouldn't be too hard to chase off...
She took a step forward and planted her forefeet, squaring her shoulders so that she faced the bear directly. She raised her tail, flagging it from side to side, and growled, snapping her teeth in a direct threat. Unfortunately, the bear would have nothing to do with it. It stood, but didn't move toward the two wolves- instead, it did pretty much the same thing she just did- squared its shoulders, heaved in a deep breath, and roared right back at her.

They were side-by-side like old times, and he had to stop himself from grinning ear-to-ear. Ambrose could remember the havoc they had caused as children. They were a terrible two-some, and it was nice to finally have some form of that back again.
Niamh squared-off and roared at the bear, but Ambrose didn't think that would do much aside from piss it off. It was entertaining to watch this go down, but he wanted to make a name for himself; chasing a bear off would do wonders in improving the opinion of the others, right?
So while his sister roared at the bear, he squared-off too, but then he lowered his head and charged straight for it. If the bear was addled by the appearance of two wolves (and maybe distracted by Niamh) then he had a shot to really screw with it.

With the bear standing off against them and refusing to leave, there wasn't much else to be done- either surrender and let it pass, or take after it. Ambrose seemed to sense that this was the only viable option and bolted, and Niamh was only a pace behind him to start off with. Tossing its head and rolling its shoulders, the bear too ambled forward, slowly gaining momentum as it charged directly toward Ambrose.
Niamh, who was slighter and nimbler, managed to arc around and hit the bear first- but due to the fact that it was in motion, her aim was off. She managed to grab a mouthful of loose skin off the bear's shoulder, but its skin was so thick and tough that no matter how she gritted her teeth together, they wouldn't meet. Still, she had to do something- and if she was nothing more than an annoying mosquito stinging at its side, then at least she was doing something.

The bear came right for him — that was not what he had anticipated but it got his blood pumping! He thought he was going to get trampled or something but then his sister was there, snapping and pulling and harassing, or trying to anyways. He watched her golden figure dive in for some action — but she was deflected pretty quickly. Still, it gave him enough time to focus on the bear properly.
Ambrose let out a deep rumbling as he launched himself at the bear, snapping at the creature's square snout, trying to catch the flesh of the face, feeling his teeth catch against the short fur, anything he could do to distract the beast's broad head and keep it's attention off his sister.

Niamh worried for Ambrose, who attacked the bear head-on, which wasn't probably the best option as it kept him directly in the bear's line of vision and path. She bit down harder on the fur of the bear's shaggy shoulder and definitely managed to distract it- at least for a moment or two. Unfortunately, when it turned its attention on her, it was with one large, heavy forepaw that was swung in her direction. She let go just before the paw hit her, sending her flying a few feet away. Fortunately, she'd been expecting it, and the bear's focus was still on her brother, so the swat did nothing but sting and cause her to lose her breath for a moment or two.
She circled around to the bear's other side, and leapt in again, but at that moment the bear moved, so her teeth snapped in the air. Now that the bear was aware of her, it was much more difficult for her to land a blow- though it was faced with Ambrose head on, it still managed to evade a few of Niamh's snaps and bites, and even when she did manage to grab some of the bear's skin, its pelt was too thick for her to break through.

He should've known better - he did know better, but that didn't stop him from going after the bear's face. It's retaliation came as no surprise. Ambrose wanted to prove himself and to defend his new home, his sister, his chance at winning the fight or the bet — he wanted so many things and he was determined to win. But the bear had a mind of its own and it did not like being harassed. As it cast aside Niamh, Ambrose glanced hastily after her with some worry, but then the bear was set upon him again. It swat him aside with a boorish smack of his head, and then lunged.
Ambrose tried to back off, to avoid the teeth of the agitated creature, but he wasn't as quick as his sister and he had put himself in the line of fire. The bear's head was so wide, its mouth gaping and roaring — and even as he tried to back off he knew he was in for a big hit. The bear went for his face as retribution for his own harassment and managed to clock him in the side of the head, and he felt something rip through one of his ears.
The boy felt a spike of adrenaline with his pain and surprise. He rose up on his hind legs, looking very much like a skinny doppleganger of the black bear, and pulled. As he stumbled away from the bear the creature gave a twist of it's head and pulled its bite free, taking a good chunk of Ambrose with it — a flapping chunk of ear, for starters. He felt sick to his stomach as he saw that bit of skin hanging from the bear's teeth, and soon his vision was starting to swim.

With her attacks falling flat and resulting in little to no effects, Niamh's temper began to flare. The bear had retaliated against her brother and she saw and felt blood spatter as her brother was sent backwards after rising up onto his hind feet to pull back. Desparate beyond measure, Niamh emitted a high pitched YIPE as though she herself had been injured, and surged at the bear again, hoping that even if she couldn't inflict enough pain on it, the annoyingly high-pitched sound would distract it- and it worked.
The bear turned from her bloodied brother and lifted a hefty paw again, but this time, it focused on hurting her, rather than simply pushing her away. This time, it put momentum behind the swing of its mighty paw and clubbed her square in the ribs, tearing her teeth from the fur of its pelt and sending her flying. She rolled over twice after she hit the ground, and felt a throbbing pain surge through her chest and ribs. She wasn't sure if the blood on her tongue came from her throat or if she'd bitten her lip- it was too soon to tell. But she licked it away and gathered her feet beneath her. She tilted her head back, uttered a savage and sudden warcry, and launched herself at the bear once more.

I MADE IT
Colt was actually looking for Niamh, hoping to surprise her on patrol and maybe distract her from the duties of leadership (still weird to think of). He tended to like gently trying, much as responsibility suited her.
So he was close, but if it wasn't for the sounds of the scuffle, he might have passed right on by. His ears pricked to it, though, and he picked up speed some, trotting towards the noise more out of curiosity than alarm.
That changed when he heard Niamh's challenge. The last little bit he took at a sprint, his chest suddenly tightening with anxiety even as anger filled him. Whatever she was fighting, it was about to have a real bad day. He burst on the scene and, as soon as he saw the bear, didn't bother with much else. He didn't slow and immediately charged the creature as well, not much minding the danger it presented and more intent on getting a piece of it.

He was a sitting duck. An obvious target for the enraged black bear. Even when Colt descended upon the scene and gathered his own understanding of it, Ambrose was of no use; the boy was trying to blink the blood from his eyes and put distance between himself and the creature before more harm could be done — but then the bear let out a roar and it began to charge again. It had tasted Ambrose's blood and was gunning for him. It was all he could do to stumble and side-step out of its path, but the bear was adamant that he catch the wolf.

Things weren't looking good- Ambrose looked as though he was ready to pass out, but he did his best to evade the bear who seemed intent on making Ambrose his one true victim. Niamh wouldn't have it, and charged the bear again, aiming to grapple the skin behind the bear's ear, and heard another growl- one that was new to the scenario but one she recognized well. Colt had come onto the scene at just the right time.
The bear turned its head to see Colt, tearing its fur and skin out of Niamh's jaws, but it would have none of it. With the two wolves harrying it, it lowered its head and charged directly toward Ambrose, but at the last moment, the hefty creature veered, dodging past him, and continued to gallop out toward the borders, pursued by Niamh- but she would only go so far after it.
Her ribs aching, she gave up the chase when her breathing became coughing, and slowly she turned and meandered back toward Ambrose, bloody tongue hanging out of her mouth. She uttered a soft, tired moan as she sat down by his side and bumped her muzzle against his cheek. Her wind temporarily broken, she simply sat down to rest, and allow her breathing to return to normal before she could actually assess any damage.

Niamh dropped back soon after as the bear galloped away, luckily veering around someone Colt didn't recognize. Colt, however, continued after, deadset on seeing it well away. He snarled and snapped, using the momentum of the bear's switch to flight to lead it well away from the Redhawk claim and any within.
He'd turn back once it was enough to feel it would not return.

feel free to skip for a round or two <3

He thought he was done. It was only a blip on his radar, but that thought shot through his mind and a chill ran through his system when it registered, watching as that bear came hurtling after him. The boy faced off against the creature and bared his teeth (as if that would stop it) — he was bristling all over and expected that broad head with its big teeth to cut him down. But instead the beast veered off. Niamh was at its heels, and then the man who had come to their aid.
As Colt chased it off Ambrose sank to the dirt and let out a heavy breath, one he didn't realize he had been holding, and closed his eyes. His sister's body crunched in to the grass beside him. He flicked his ears towards her and as he opened his eyes, Ambrose realized that one of them was still cloudy with blood and becoming inflamed to the point where he couldn't open it all the way.
It was at that moment he concluded something else: His wrecked ear made things sound like they were underwater. He swallowed a lump in his throat and then cleared it with a cough, then leaned against his sister as he asked her,

That was fun, lets never do that again,he commented with a sullen pseudo-cheer.

Are you OK?

Colt continued to pursue the bear, and though she was slightly frightened that the bear might turn and decide to try its luck against one wolf, she also felt fairly certain that it would simply leave, after having already been harrassed by three wolves. With Ambrose by her side, she started to clean the wound on his face as gently as she could, frowning when she noticed how badly his ear had been torn. There was no fixing that- even though the little scrap of ear lay on the ground not too far away.
She coughed slightly when he made a joking comment, and bumped her nose against his cheek. "Garbage," She wheezed, cracking a wry grin. As far as she could tell, his face was the most injured part of him, and even with that, he'd survive. She didn't have much for bloody injuries- she'd been fortunate enough that the bear's claws hadn't raked her sides, but the slap it'd given to her ribs had definitely bruised, if not cracked them. "Ribs're sore," She said, "But I don't think broken." Her voice was hushed, as speaking hurt, slightly. She readjusted her position to give her right side a bit more comfort. "You OK?"

since Ambrose is ppc, skippin ahead!
Lucky for Colt, once it was goin, the bear didn't bother stopping. He didn't close in far enough to pose an immediate threat anyway; just enough to spur retreat. He chased the thing a solid length before wheeling around and breathlessly jogging back.
The instant he came in view, he let out a low rumble and came immediately over to Niamh, checking her over. The fuck she was doin taking on a bear without calling for backup was beyond him, but he couldn't really be mad; he was just glad she seemed (mostly?) sound.

Just gonna tuck this away neatly since we're all threading well past it now, heh.
Ambrose had gained himself a pretty gnarly facial wound, and she did her best to console him, telling him he looked even more badass now that he had something to mar his pretty facial features, even though she did get the feeling that he wasn't quite in the mood to joke about it just yet. She smiled appreciatively at Colt when he circled back, and leaned toward him when he joined the two of them. Of course, somewhat awkward introductions were had, and once the two were able to catch their breath, they left the borders, not too much worse for the wear.
