He was frozen in time, his mind pulling bits and pieces of the past weeks and all of the scenarios he could have swallowed his pride and pulled his family together. Was it the reassurance of his love for her that had not been clear? He had taken her to the land she wanted to raise their family and abandoned the comfort of the sea for her. He had courted her and made his intentions known—called her his own, and given himself to her. They had children together. And yet, somehow, it had all come crashing down.

He swallowed, his muzzle drifting down to preen at the fiery fur of her nape, though words could not find him. She sobbed uncontrollably before him, uttering an apology to which he had no response—he could not broach the topic of Aria and Durnehviir’s burning hatred for his best friend. He could not speak on the disappearance of their son, the only comfort he held was that at the delivery of his mate’s news, there were no clear signs of trauma or devastation. It was likely the youthful boy had wandered from them.

He fell down beside her, his own stocky form moving to wrap around her, to comfort her. As if he could fit them back together like pieces of a broken puzzle.
all you have is your fire
