All Welcome

There is no change in a matter of days. She wakes up, she walks, and she mourns, and then sleeps when she doesn’t feel like doing anything else. There’s no direction in her steps and she doesn’t care where she goes. She avoided the scent of wolves when it became heavy, a pack she had been unaware of, but beyond that she’s stayed to herself when there has been a possibility she may run into another. None of the land she comes across is any more familiar than the next. When they moved from the mountain, the weather had been different, and the world doesn’t leave anything similar behind.

The blooms of the Maplewood of flowers and berries leave an aromatic peace of reprieve of her usual darkened mind. She finds a patch of blackberries that have begun to darken and her nose touches them. The leaves make her think of Grayday and when he’d been bitten by a snake. It hadn’t been that long ago but the mere though so suddenly causes an ache in her chest. Quietly, she does her best to set it aside (with little success) and noses her way through the bush to find the riper berries that give her the scent of rabbit nearby.

Coelacanth’s reappearance — and subsequent disappearance — had shaken the medicine man more than he would like to admit. The girl’s scent had all but been erased from the coast and the suddenness of it irked him to no end.  It wasn’t like her to do that… as a puppy, if the man could recall correctly, she had been a playful, spritely thing [and nearly entirely codependent her twin], but not even Amoxtli was with her now.

Perhaps she had simply grown more solitary with age. He, of anyone, understood the need for detachment and isolation; it was something he had pursued his entire life.

But the fact remained that he was quite displeased, and with nothing keeping the angakkuq tied to the humid coast — he departed. Travelworn paws expertly traversed the southbound landscape and he truly made great time. Several times a day he would throw his nose to the wind and see if he could catch the scent of a certain atramentous girl on the ancient winds; but alas, he could not, so he’d continue on.

If you were to ask him if he was looking for her [and even though all signs pointed to it], he would laugh, say no and offer the excuse that he simply had nothing better to do. It wasn’t entirely untrue, so Komodo often took breaks from the long swathes of windshield time to hunt, sleep and generally laze about. He had been in this particular grove one day, maybe two, when he found a stranger stalking about. Enticed by the possibility of a conversation, Komodo rose slowly, stretched his limbs in turn let slip a low  chuff to alert her of his presence.

“saw a flock of grouse to the north,” he called to her, the rumble of his voice offering the busy woman a helpful tidbit. He was not hungry, having just eaten, but perhaps the information could help a fellow traveler.

The voice startles her to attention, not having heard or smelled him beforehand. She swings her head around to look at his form. He is older, based on her first look, but he does not quite seem as old as Grayday (though age hadn’t greeted her former friend very well) but her ears droop against the back of her head. She is silent for a long moment, having to repeat the sounds of his words once or twice before she realizes the weight of what he’s said. Her brows knit together, glancing away as she tries to decipher which way is north, but she shrugs it off.

“I’m not very good at catching birds,” she says. She’d never successfully taken one down and she doesn’t feel like wasting what energy she has left. In the meantime, she scans the brute a little longer before looking away once more should that be the end of their conversation.

She surveyed him and rightly so. His smelted gaze trained on the girl’s, clocking her ocular ambulations down to the last flicker, following smoothly even as her eyes darted and she looked away. There was a moment of silence following her passive rebuff and Komodo seized the moment to take a cocksure step forward. “aye,” he acquiesced, and if Adeline would turn back to face him, she would see a grimace of a man caught in his embellishment. He, too, had passed over the same flock in search of more effortless fare. The brute exhaled deeply and decided he was close enough, so he tucked his haunches against the earth and tipped his ears forward to better hear the yearling girl in whatever she had to say. When she said nothing, the earthstalker spoke again, his few eremitic words riding upon the thick reverberation of his voice. “but,” his tail tossed upon the ground absentmindedly.“there’s a certain thrill to it.”

The other wolf disrupted her thoughts that when she turned back to the berries, she’d forgotten what she was doing. Her stomach hadn’t, however, but her purpose where she stands is lost beyond the sweet smell of berries. However, the other doesn’t go away despite the rather obvious displeasure in his presence. The last thing she really wants is company, and especially by a male, but he doesn’t seem to give up and she turns back over her shoulder and pulls herself out of the berry bush to face the other.

“Sure,” she says with gusto, releasing an annoyed sigh, and turns on her heels in the other direction.

Well, that hadn’t gone exactly as the angakkuq had hoped.  The man never had been good at words, never had to be, and he all too often found himself relying upon observations and monikers in order to associate with his company. Much of the time he lucked out, his sincere yet taciturn nature somehow winning others over, but he never felt entirely comfortable. It was reason he considered himself a vagrant, a loner, an earthstalker, and preferred his solitude to the platitudes and pressures of others. Consequentially, he appeared a deep man upon the surface; but he was simple wolf, with simple wants and simple pleasures – and not being scorned by others was one of those pleasures.

But Komodo was born a man with tenacity, an overinflated ego and a will to never cede – especially not to a yearling shewolf, who shrugged him off as easily as she would the clouds of summertide mosquitos. The girl continued on her way, indignation palpable, and Komodo rose to supervene. His thickset maw held tightly shut, tongue stowed. As the shrouded shewolf moved away, he was five or so paces behind, eyes following the agouti flash of her pelt as it hit the sun. He wondered what she would do about his languid pursuit.

Adeline gets several steps ahead, away from the bush she’d been investigating (why is it her leaving?) but doesn’t get far before she hears the footfalls behind her. She doesn’t even have time to process that it should be him that leaves so she can go about her business. Instead, he’s following her, and this causes her ears to press back and slow to a stop, turning so that she can face him. She is far from a fighter but a feeling deep within her chest does not settle well as he pursues her. Instead, she swallows a thick lump in the back of her throat and a flicker of her lip in warning.

Again, the shewolf reacted unfavorable to his languorous advances. There was a flash of ivories, a flicking of the ears — and she bade him do not come closer. She was rife with apprehension, a reaction which seemed unwarranted to his planate spirit. Stemming from a sense of chivalry, Komodo had no desire to impress his company upon an unwilling audience. He was a vagabond at heart and would not fight for company.

His multihued ears pressed against the base of his school and he turned his head, showing her that the brute meant her no harm. Women were delicate things, meant to be nurtured and protected instead of made to be nervous. ”My apologies, miss.” his gravelly alto asserted. ”I see you are busy.” His tail swung low, back and forth, as if to say there is no harm in wanting solitude. I understand.

The northerner turned to leave, as Adeline had done so many times during there meeting, but cast her a sidelong glance in case she had a change of heart.

Finally, the male gathers the hint that she doesn’t want to be pestered by strangers. Her bright green eyes harden as he then begins to make his departure, a few steps away, but glances back. Adeline has barely moved from her spot though she is ready to go. When he finally makes his move to leave her alone for good does she turn and go about her way, a little more disgruntled than before.
