It had begun with a dream. When her mother had left, she had asked the spirits who guided her life to send her a dream to tell her what to do. The dream was this: a spider moved in the night, creating her web to catch prey the next day. Above her the moon shone down. The web glistened in the silvery light. The moon was, indeed, beautiful, but the moon to Naia was not a good sign. It meant confusion, fears and anxieties, etc. From behind the spider, a wolf suddenly appeared, a wolf with a mermaid’s tail dragging along behind it. With her came the light of the sun, illuminating the darkness and bringing the daytime.
Naia, who had been named for the water nymphs, guessed that she was the wolf who had brought the sunlight. So she was looking for a wolf or a pack who was symbolized by the spider. This wolf or group of wolves was going through a hard time, and she needed to go to them to help them. That morning, she thanked the spirits for sending her this dream and went on her way. So far, she had not been successful in finding “the spider,” but she was sure she would when the time was right.
For now, she walked along the lake here in this dry steppe, lapping at the water every now and then. It was summer now and she was not worried about the time it would take her to find the place she needed to go. Just so long as she eventually made it.
