she wove herself betwixt the sequoias that lined the forest's edge, the vanguard upon the sand— their first line of protection against the wolves of the depths, should their agreeableness to peace suddenly shift. but for the ever-present feeling of loss, for both lasher and the distance of those related by blood, life beneath the sentinel's watch felt no different than it had before. sanctuary blanketed the forest, thick as it had always been, and though she had feared that its magick would fray— it was the same as it had ever been.
still, emaleth was the watcher. it was her duty to protect the wolves that had made this sanctuary their home alongside her, and though she was not a warrior of the physical sense, she could lay magicks to bolster the trees' own. it occurred to her that she hadn't cast a single spell since her father's passing— it seemed too painful, for it all reminded her of him! the pain had not lessened, but something in her soul had shifted. she had been limbless, to cast her gifts aside in such a way, and perhaps that was the reason she was deaf to her father's spirit.
something inside her had been awakened with the dawn, a small fire that burned in her chest, growing hotter and hotter until she realized how selfish she had been in her grief. donnelaith was her home, her blood, her family— and she must tend to it, as taltos had! it was the reason she was here now, murmuring spells of protection, delicately placing hexes within the trees to be triggered if those that crossed its border had hearts filled with ill-intent— a fallen branch here, the rage of a slumbering badger there.
