the guardian had ventured away from anu for a short while to peruse the plains. it was as though his lengthy ears could determine just how many voles and ground squirrels had made a home on the rolling fields. he slunk toward the nearest slope and paused to taste the scent of the saline air – a scent that he had never been familiar with. in their time there, anti had grown accustomed to the harsh aroma. he had almost missed it on the days where he had slipped further from the shores than he’d intended. were it not for the guiding light of his companion, the volgra would have likely found a comfortable place beside the waters and lived out the rest of his days in bliss. as it was, though… anti had a purpose and he was not to stray far from that reason to exist.
after a few swift movements, the russet and cream figure had caught three voles and a field mouse that he had swallowed in a single motion. the other three morsels were gripped gingerly by his narrow muzzle. the guardian turned toward where he had last seen anu and set out at a brisk trot. though small, the creatures would be a good start to their day. while the duo had traveled well, anti still had not heard from anu where he would like for them to settle. the volgra had started to wonder if they would remain in those wilds for very long at all.

anu too, had begun to become accustomed to the brackish air. he still cared little for the ocean -- it was a wild and savage mystery to him, and he had often seen lurking, incomprehensible figures within the murkwater depths. he did not wish to acquaint himself with these shadows of another world, and had not swum since.
hungry, anu set out for anti's company only to come across the volgra carrying a small bounty his way. halting with a wag of his tail, anu apprised the male's catch: it was good that anti had come along for this enterprise, otherwise anu would have starved to nothing long ago.
