Burke was still tired which means that fighting this weight that was Cicero was not helping him grow less tired. The same was for Potema holding his mouth open. 

His breathing grew more labored and wheezing like squeaks and yelps came from the warrior. Burke felt horrible. If he was weak mentally he might have given up due to the pain but he had to be there for Meldresi and also for her kids. He couldn't die today. Not today, he told himself.
